How to Stop Messages From Ringing Twice on Your iPhone (2024)

Notifications are essential to keep up with incoming messages. However, the way notifications work for the iPhone Messages app can be really annoying at times. Your iPhone dings when you get a message by default. But if you don't open this message, your iPhone will ding again a couple of minutes later.

Considering most of us glance at notifications from the Lock Screen, nothing is more frustrating than unlocking your iPhone just to find that it's the same message you read a moment ago.

Thankfully, this is a notification setting for the Messages app that you can turn off.

You can blame the default Repeat Alerts setting in iOS for the double notifications from iMessage texts.

iOS is set to repeat alerts once for the Messages app, meaning you'll get a second alert for the same message two minutes after the first one. To avoid this repeated alert, you need to mark the message as read.

Or, you can turn off repeat alerts or double text notifications on your iPhone using the following instructions:

  1. First, open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Then, scroll down and select Messages.
  3. In the Messages menu, tap on Notifications to proceed.
  4. Here, scroll down to the bottom and tap on Customize Notifications.

After opening the Customize Notifications menu, follow the steps below:

  1. Find the setting for Repeat Alerts at the top. Tap on it.
  2. Next, choose the first option, which is Never, and you're all set.

You will no longer receive a second alert after a few minutes for any incoming messages, whether you read them or not. This is simply one way to control annoying notifications on your iPhone.

Alternatively, you can use one of the six Focus modes to filter out unwanted notifications and alerts when you're busy.

Repeat Alerts are Unnecessary for Most People

Repeat Alerts can be increased up to a maximum of 10 times, in case you're someone who needs them. They'll repeat at two-minute intervals. Although this feature is useful for those who regularly miss notifications, not everyone needs it as the default setting for Messages in iOS.

The reason is that most users glance at notifications to see who the sender is. And if you're someone who chooses not to read some of your messages, you'd probably hate to keep Repeat Alerts enabled.
