From holiday parties to casual wear, the possibilities are endless when it comes to outfits with sweaters. In need of some styling inspiration? Check out these fashion stylist-approved sweater styling hacks.

How to Style a Sweater

According to the pros, the key to styling sweater outfits is proportions and silhouettes. “I love either balancing proportions with a slim silhouette on the bottom like a straight jean, a slip skirt, or going all out with the oversized look and pairing with baggy denim, boots, wool coat, and a matching chunky scarf,” says Ashlyn Greer, professional stylist and co-founder of Fashivly. Within your own closet, try balancing proportions by committing to all oversized clothing or a slimmer silhouette.

To experiment with silhouettes, fashion stylist, Corina Gaffey, recommends pairing a mini skirt with chunky boots. By showing a little leg, this will help balance the appearance of fabric. “Try a half-tuck into the waist of the trousers or belt the chunky sweater to create more shape, and add heels if you want to elevate and polish your outfit,” says Gaffey.

Pants

Trousers, denim, leather pants, and more all mix well with sweaters. Opt for contrasting colors when pairing any pant with a sweater. (Think a cream knit sweater with dark wash denim to compliment the colors and pieces.)

For a monochromatic moment, a matching sweater and pants set is perfect for simpler styling. “I love a chunky knit co-ord. It's just so cozy for winter and a done-in-one outfit, as you don't have to think too hard about how to style it. The warm separates look so chic with knee-high boots, too,” says Gaffey. This matching knit two-piece set ($50; amazon.com) is an effortless way to look put together this season.

Skirts

Whether you're going for a daytime or nighttime look, a sweater pairs perfectly with a mini skirt, knee high boots, and sheer tights. To create some shape in your outfit, add a belt near the waist for a flattering silhouette.

For evening wear, layer different textures with your sweater to stand out. “I love mixing sequin trousers, embellished skirts, or silk slip skirts with knits to offset the casual vibe and make it suitable for the evening,” says Gaffey.By combining different textures, it creates contrast in the look. Greer recommends adding a poplin shirt underneath a sweater and an oversized wool blazer to include various textures in your look.

Dresses

Layering your look with sweaters is an easy way to dress up or down a look. Gaffey suggests a chunky cardigan paired with a slip dress for a casual but elevated occasion. Depending on the vibe you're going for, throw on some sneakers or heels with the look.

Types of Sweaters—and How to Wear Them

Cable-Knit Sweater: Depending on your personal style, look for a cable-knit sweater with a slimmer silhouette. This cable-knit sweater ($148; ralphlauren.com) is a classic and versatile item for your wardrobe. The slim-fitting silhouette makes this a great piece for layering. Tie a sweater's sleeves and wear it over the shoulders for a polished preppy look. Greer explains that a classic sweater pairing will always be denim, but she’s been loving unexpected combinations such as a sweater with a maxi skirt or trousers.

Wool Sweater: Add a pop of color into your sweater collection to refresh your wardrobe. The Good Merino Wool Crewneck Sweater ($59; everlane.com) makes a bold statement with the bright orange color. It has a relaxed silhouette featuring two small slits on each side for added detail. Pair this sweater with a neutral pant or dress so that the color is the star of the look.

Mock Neck Sweater: Similar to the classic turtleneck, a mock neck sweater has a high collar that covers the neck, but doesn't have fabric to fold over. If turtleneck sweaters feel uncomfortable, a mock neck is a great option. Gaffey suggests pairing mock sweaters with skirts and your favorite boots. This mock neck sweater ($52; lulus.com) has a relaxed silhouette and ribbed knit material on the neck, sleeves, and bottom of the sweater.

Cashmere Sweater: Cashmere is a quiet luxury classic for expensive-looking sweater materials. This cashmere sweater ($128; jcrew.com) is a staple for many occasions-from the office to a holiday party. “Whether you're more into neutrals, color, or pattern, choose something that fits with your personal style and you'll be able to style this for almost any occasion,” says Greer.

Off-the-Shoulder Sweater: Off-the-shoulder necklines lie below the shoulder and are an elegant choice for nighttime looks. The Topshop Chunky Off-the-Shoulder sweater ($65; nordstrom.com) is a date night staple. For an extra twist, the neckline features a folded and twisted neckline. Style with sheer black tights, a black mini skirt, and your favorite boots for an elegant night on the town.
