JoJo: What Makes Stone Ocean Such a Controversial Entry (2024)

The fans of JoJo'sBizarreAdventure finally got the opportunity to see the much-awaited Part 6— StoneOcean animated. Like all the previous JoJo parts, the StoneOcean has become really popular within the anime community, with many even calling it a potential contender for anime of the year.

StoneOcean is being animated by David Production. The studio has always done an outstanding job and it is one of the main reasons why the fans love the anime. StoneOcean is streaming on Netflix and it is far from finished, so it will give fans something to look forward to until Araki starts his new manga. While StoneOcean may be getting a lot of plaudits, it is actually among the most controversial JoJo parts within the fanbase.

JJBA: StoneOcean has a great protagonist in Jolyne Cujoh, an outstanding supporting cast, and an amazing villain in Enrico Pucci. The story is arguably much better than the previous parts and it makes a person wonder, why is it hated so much by the JoJo community. The main reason behind its bad reputation has to do with the conclusion of the series. Unlike all the previous parts where the bad has always been beaten by the good, in StoneOcean, the villain managed to defeat the protagonist, Jolyne.

During the conclusion, Enrico Pucci killed Jolyne Cujoh, and he was pretty confident that no one would be able to stop him. Not only did Pucci kill Jolyne, but he also managed to kill others who were helping her. Pucci got rid of Anasui, Ermes, and even Jotaro Kujo. The death of Jotaro in particular was a difficult one for the fans to take as he was a part of the series for a very long time. The triumph of bad over good upset many fans. The ending of StoneOcean is also deemed pretty confusing. Another reason that made the fans upset is that the Stands in StoneOcean can be really confusing, which makes it extremely important to pay attention to details. Stands such as Dragon's Dream, Yo-Yo Ma, work in such unique ways that the fans consider them bothersome as it is very easy to get lost in the details.

Finally, Jotaro was nerfed very early on in the series. It is a well-known fact that Jotaro is a fan favorite, and having him in a coma for the most part of StoneOcean did not go down very well with fans. He was only involved in the series very late on as he joined Jolyne in the fight against Pucci, but as mentioned above, Jotaro did not have the impact many had hoped he would.

In every JoJo finale, the heroes have always managed to beat defeat the villains. In Part 1, Jonathan was able to defeat Dio Brando and the two "died" together on the ship. In Part 2, Joseph managed to defeat Kars, who was the perfect lifeform. Joseph only lost one of his hands in the process.

StardustCrusaders saw Jotaro defeating DIO with minimal casualties. Jotaro even managed to revive his grandfather, Joseph with the help of Star Platinum. Part 4 saw Josuke defeating Kira Yoshikage and releasing Morioh from his clutches. Finally in Part 5, Giorno managed to triumph against Diavolo, which was a rather anticlimactic ending.

In the case of StoneOcean, Jolyne, Ermes, Jotaro, and Anasui were all killed by Enrico Pucci. The priest was unstoppable with his overpowered Stand, Made in Heaven. The responsibility to defeat Pucci fell to Emporio, a young boy, however, the latter managed to pull it off by using Weather Report's Stand disc. With Pucci's death, the universe was reset and Emporio met Jolyne and Anasui's counterparts.

Despite not many fans failing to realize it, StoneOcean's final arc is extremely important to the entire JoJo series. With the universe being reset and the world rid of Pucci, Araki got the license to experiment. StoneOcean brought a close to the story of the Joestars, who were tormented by DIO and his minions.

This was a big opportunity for Araki and he pounced on it and utilized it to the fullest. After successfully bringing the story of the original Joestars to a close, Araki focused on creating new characters in a completely new universe, that was not related to Parts 1-6 in any way. Steel Ball Run retained some ideas and it continued to make references to the first six parts while existing in its own isolated continuity.

It is not a secret that Steel Ball Run is one of the most critically acclaimed manga and it is arguably the best JoJo part. However, it is important to remember that Steel Ball Run would not be possible without StoneOcean. So while some still dislike it as a whole, StoneOcean was essential in giving the serries a new beginning.
