A tournament is a multi-team competition in a specific game or sport that follows a fixed schedule and culminates in a victory. There are many types of tournaments, such as:
- Knock-out or Elimination tournament
- League or Round robin tournament
- Combination tournament
- Challenge tournament

This article discusses what a knock-out tournament is and some related terms.
What is a Knock-Out Tournament?
A knock-out competition has various names: elimination, sudden death, or disposal. It is a sort of competition where the losing team is no longer a part of it. They are completely eliminated from the tournament. On the other hand, the winner will play further in the succeeding rounds.
The various types of knock-out tournaments include:
Single Knock-out or Single Elimination
In this type of knock-out tournament, the team has zero chances to compete in the tournament if defeated in a game.
Double Knock-Out or Double Elimination
All the teams have to face losses in two games before being eliminated from the competition.
Consolation
Often, the team’s defeat and elimination in a single knock-out tournament may be due to chance. Hence, losing teams are given an opportunity to win subsidiary honours.
There are further two types of consolation competitions:
- Type I: Teams get two chances. Hence, losing teams receive an opportunity to win subsidiary honours.
- Type II: Teams who lose in a regular knock-out round get one chance to compete again and win secondary gains.
Now that we know what knock-out competitions are. Let us understand two important terms in single knock-outs: bye and seeding.
Single Knock-Out Formula Tournament Formula
Suppose there are N = 15 teams are competing in a tournament. Then, the total number of matches in the tournament would be (N – 1) = (15 – 1) = 14.
Bye
A bye is a benefit granted to a team that is determined, in most cases, by seeding or a random drawing of lots. A bye alludes to the coordinators planning to pass on a given round because of a few conditions.
In bye, a group heads to the next round of competition without rivalling others; this group sits out for a certain span till their chance to play.
However, this term isn’t the same as a literal farewell; it is a modification. Many individuals could see the word bye and comprehend it as a short type of the customary goodbye word farewell.
Seeding
Seeding is the technique of scheduling outstanding teams so that stronger teams do not face each other right at the start of a tournament. It is an intimately acquainted term from sports, wherein the strength of their old records augments the position of the contenders in the competition.
A seed is thus a contender or full group in a game or other competition given a starter positioning for the draw.
Tennis introduced the term. This seeding technique may seem unfair. However, it is a great way to keep onlookers’ advantage alive until the end of the competition.
Special Seeding
In a tournament, the organizers usually draw fixtures so that the best players or teams play directly in the quarter or semi-finals.
At the quarter-finals stage, a fixture of 24 teams participating in a tournament with four teams, i.e., 1, 12, 13, and 24, is given unique seeding.
To determine the number of byes for the special seeding fixture, remove the number of special seeded teams (4) from the total number of teams competing (24), i.e., 24 – 4 = 20.
The number of byes now equals 32 – 20 = 12 byes.
Method of Drawing Fixtures
We use the power of two to determine the drawing of fixtures for a certain number of participating teams, e.g., 2, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26…, etc., i.e., 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64,…
If 16 teams enter a tournament, there will be no byes, resulting in 16 – 16 = 0.
If the number of teams playing is not a power of two, the organizers will give a certain number of teams byes in the first round. They determine these bye values by subtracting the number of teams from the next higher number, which is a power of two.
For example, if 13 teams competed, the number of byes would be 16 – 13 = 3, and if 25 teams competed, the number of byes would be 32 – 25 = 7.
Thus, we now understand some important knock-out tournament formulae and terms. Let us now understand the advantages and disadvantages of a single knock-out or elimination tournament.
Advantages
Here are the advantages of a single knock-out tournament:
- The threat of the team’s elimination from the competition upon losing a match fuels fierce and intense competition
- The tournament involves a lesser number of officials
- Because there are fewer matches, the competitions take less time to complete
- It contributes to the improvement of sporting standards
Disadvantages
Some cons of a single-elimination tournament are:
- A team’s defeat maybe by chance; it also means they lost the chance to compete again in the tournament
- If the fixtures are chosen only by lot, strong teams playing in the early rounds may be eliminated, allowing inferior teams to advance to the semi-finals or finals
- Winners of one match or round must wait for the winner of another match to play the next round
