Kylie Jenner Explains Why She Wore *That* Wedding Dress For The Met Gala’s ‘Gilded Glamour’ Theme (2024)

It has been 24 hours since the 2022 Met Gala, and opinions over the ensembles and theme-fulfilling attempts are still running rampant all over the internet.

And while some criticisms felt excessively harsh, other felt, well, kind of warranted. For this year’s Met Gala, the theme was ‘Gilded Glamour’, meaning guests would need to personify the ostentatious fashion of New York’s style scene between 1870 and 1890. For certain celebrities that meant top hats, opera gloves, crinoline skirts and intricate embroidery.

But when Kylie Jenner took to the Metropolitan Museum of Art steps in a white, wedding dress with a matching baseball cap and veil, fans and fashion fanatics were left scratching their heads.

Of course, every year there is a contentious debate over why the A-list guests always tend to ignore the theme of the night, especially since the entire event is a costume gala which should encourage people to actually dress up accordingly.

However, when it came to the youngest Kardashian-Jenner sister, her take on the theme seemingly didn’t attempt to be theme-appropriate, which left fans criticising the ensemble. But it turns out, there was a reason why Jenner wore what she did.

Taking to Instagram, Jenner explained the relevance to her look and the sentimental meaning behind why she chose to wear it for the 2022 Met Gala.

In an Instagram Story, she shared that the bridal look was created to honour the late Off-White designer, Virgil Abloh, who passed away from cardiac angiosarcoma in November 2021 at the age of 41.

“Virgil and I were supposed to go to the Met together before it got postponed in 2020,” Jenner wrote.

“To celebrate V tonight and his incredible legacy truly means the world to me, I’m humbled to wear this dress and honour my talented beautiful friend. We felt you tonight Virgil and love you forever ♾ & thank u to the entire @off____white team !!”

Jenner’s outfit served as a contemporary twist on a wedding gown that was designed by Abloh. The custom bridal moment included a tiered, full skirt made from tulle, with a mesh T-shirt that sported the branded “Off” logo on the bust. Rather than opting for a traditional wedding veil, Jenner donned a backwards baseball cap that featured a mini veil and floral appliqué.

An iteration similar to Jenner’s Met Gala moment closed Off-White’s Fall 2022 show, which was designed by Abloh before he passed away.

As for how the mother-of-two’s fashion look sat within the event’s Gilded Glamour theme, Vogue explained that Jenner chose to “honour the Met’s exhibition inside, which explores American fashion”.

For Jenner to wear a wedding gown to the Met Gala, it added a playful and youthful twist that Abloh became famous for throughout his career, making it the perfect homage to one of the greatest American designers in the fashion industry.

Supporting her decision to serve an ode to Abloh, fans were still debating whether she should have swapped out her Met Gala after party dress instead, since it was also an Off-White number.

Fans were also quick to assume that the clear connection to a wedding dress was a hidden announcement that Jenner and her partner, Travis Scott, were set to wed. Given that the pair have recently sparked marriage rumours, the theories were expected.

However, Scott did not attend the Met Gala with Jenner, leaving the 24-year-old to walk the red carpet with her sister, Khloé Kardashian, who wore a gold Moschino dress for her debut.

As for what Jenner will be wearing for her 2023 walk down the red carpet, we’ll just have to wait and see.
