Looking sharp in a turtleneck (seriously) – LGFG Fashion House (2024)

There is a long list of clothing that you can style with your favorite blazer. One of them (and probably the favorite of the people from Nordic countries) is the equally loved and hated turtleneck. Up until recently turtlenecks had a misguided reputation for being frumpy and unflattering. However, when styled right, this cold-weather classic can actually transform your ensemble and make you look pretty sharp. The turtleneck really is a timeless piece that just completes any look for winter. So it’s very unsurprising that it’s back again.

For this coming winter try teaming your turtleneck with a jacket. You can wear it with a blazer jacket, a suit or a coat. The challenge lies is choosing the right color for you and one that blends in with your jacket. And also keep in mind the fabrics. If you choose an inexpensive turtleneck, it will show. And the cheaper turtleneck fabrics tend to give you that itchy feeling plus it might make your expensive tailor made suit look inexpensive as well; we just don’t want to give this impression. Make sure you go for a cotton blend, silk blend, cashmere or soft wool to avoid discomfort. Those materials will keep you warm in the freezing weather and they’ll also let your skin breathe.

The rule you have to keep in mind is to avoid the mock turtlenecks and semi turtlenecks. The point of turtleneck is to keep your neck warm and feel comfortable going scarf-less. So choose your collars accordingly. Also keep in mind the thickness of your turtleneck. If it’s really thick it should go solo, and the thin ones can be layered as described above.

Men – you don’t really want to wear any jewelry on top of your turtleneck if the point is not to look like a character from a 70’s movie (could we please finally forget those medallions men used to wear!?). And for ladies – if styled right, sometimes the necklace can look OK on top of your turtleneck but if you are not 100% sure then it is better to skip it.

You will want to approach this trend with caution, but if you can pull it off you’ll be able to get a lot more wear out of any blazers in your wardrobe, and you’ll look like you know what you’re doing. Plus, you’ll be spending the upcoming winter months with a much warmer neck than the rest of us.

Yours sincerely,

LGFG Fashion House
