Meet the 24-year-old who dropped out of uni to start a fashion label (2024)

Most teenagers choose to take a break between finishing school and starting their university degree.

But for one eager eighteen-year-old that 'boring period where you're doing basically nothing' was put towards designing custom shoes and selling them over Facebook.

It all started when Sydney-based Argylica Conditsis, now 24, saw a pair of boots on Tumblr.

'I looked everywhere online for them but couldn't find them. So I purchased a pair of plain boots and bejeweled them myself. People were stopping me on the street asking me where I'd bought them.

'One friend asked me if she could buy a pair. So I started making more,' the entrepreneur told Daily Mail Australia.

'By this time I'd started university and I was doing graphic design but this was my true passion. I had to make a decision about whether I wanted to expand the business or stay at uni.

'Leaving my degree was the best decision I've ever made,' she said.

Babyboo Fashiongrew from just shoes to incorporate clothing and accessories too. With that sudden growth Argylicaneeded some extra help to run the company.

Her younger brother William, 21, dropped out of his own university degree to work alongside his sister.

'He has a pretty big role here. He's in charge of marketing and operations.

'We work really well together. We now have a team of twelve who are constantly styling, designing, marketing and doing photo shoots. It's certainly busy,' she said.

The label was behind an 'instant breast lift' video which went viral as soon asArgylica uploaded it online.

'I think it hit 15 million views on Facebook alone. I always knew that was going to be a key piece.

'Being in the industry so long you know what women are having problems with. I knew it was going to be of use, particularly for those who had sent me messages struggling to find a bra to wear with a slinky top,' she said.

Argylica's core mission is to empower women with bold statement pieces.

But she said she was routinely talked down to for making the decision to leave university and wants to prove the naysayers wrong.

'I definitely wouldn't say it's easy. I'd never tell people that. It's been a journey for sure.

'But when I see people look at me differently in a business sense because I'm a female, and they say I can't do it, it really motivates me to show them otherwise,' she said (pictured is a velvet dress from the label)

'The pieces that sell well are the statement ones. When you walk into a room you want to be able to draw eyes,' the 24-year-old said (pictured is Instagram model Hannah Polites wearing the label)

'I love what I do so much that I don't mind if things get tough,' she said.

The brand, which was officially launched in 2013, is hoping to reach 700,000 Instagram followers this year but Argylica doesn't want to get caught up in the business of 'fast fashion'.

'The pieces that sell well are the statement ones. When you walk into a room you want to be able to draw eyes. For people to be asking where you got your outfit from. That's what we want to give our customers,' the 24-year-old said.

And the market appears to be loving that approach, said Argylica.

'We've grown by 300 per cent this year alone. I'll put it to you this way, I turned my yearly salary into my daily income.

'I'm so proud of how far we've come. We're definitely planning world domination.'
