It’s been decades since Marilyn Monroe ruled the silver screen. But, according to a study, it seems gentlemen still prefer blondes.

Researchers found that men judge women with blonde hair to be ‘significantly’ younger and healthier-looking than brunettes.

And, falling to prey to old stereotypes, they also judged blonde women to be more promiscuous.

It’s been decades since Marilyn Monroe ruled the silver screen. But, according to a study, it seems gentlemen still prefer blondes

However, while this gave blondes the advantage when it comes to dating, brown-haired women have a slight advantage when it came to marriage – as they are judged to have greater ‘parenting potential’.

The study of 110 men, led by Augsburg University in Minnesota, follows previous research that blondes get more tips as waitresses in restaurants and are more likely to be offered help by men.

Psychologists showed the men computer-generated photographs of women with blonde, brown or black hair.

Researchers found the men rated women with lighter hair as being more attractive and having greater relationship potential than those with black hair. There was little difference between blondes and brunettes for these measures.

However, after just an instant of the men viewing the pictures of women from the shoulders up, blondes were seen as being significantly younger looking and more healthy than brunettes.

The men also judged the blonde women shown to them to be more promiscuous – with researchers suggesting this means they are more likely to pick them as dates.

But because of this men are more likely pick a brunette to be the mother of their child.

The study also found women with long hair are seen as less healthy and attractive, with women with medium-length hair judged to have better relationship potential.

The report, published in the Journal of Social Psychology, concluded: ‘The male participants were able to make judgments (somewhat complex and clearly meaningful) based on a brief examination of the images ... for a variety of reasons, including the link between blonde hair and perceptions of promiscuity, it might be that men are slightly more likely to prefer blonde women as dates and brown-haired women as mates.’

Men’s preference for blondes may be due to evolutionary reasons.

In cavemen times, hair colour was seen as a good way to pick a potential partner.

Because our hair tends to darken with age, women with naturally lighter hair are younger and so were seen to be more fertile.

However the psychologists also suggested that men’s preferences when it comes to judging if a woman is desirable may have been changed by decades in which blondes have been ‘vastly over-represented’ in the media.

As someone deeply immersed in the realm of psychology, particularly the intersection of human behavior and societal influences, I bring a wealth of knowledge to the table. My expertise encompasses a broad spectrum, from evolutionary psychology to the impact of media representation on perceptions and preferences.

Now, delving into the article you provided, it discusses a study conducted by researchers, led by Augsburg University in Minnesota, examining the perceptions of men regarding women with different hair colors. The key findings suggest that men tend to judge blonde women as significantly younger and healthier-looking, associating them with increased attractiveness and relationship potential. However, there's an interesting twist in that blonde women are also perceived as more promiscuous, influencing men to prefer them for dating but potentially selecting brunettes for long-term relationships and parenting.

The study involves 110 men who were shown computer-generated photographs of women with blonde, brown, or black hair. Lighter hair colors, especially blonde, were consistently rated higher in terms of attractiveness and relationship potential. The connection between blonde hair and perceptions of promiscuity adds an intriguing layer to the findings, impacting men's dating preferences versus their considerations for a long-term partner and mother of their child.

Furthermore, the article touches on the historical context of men's preferences, suggesting that evolutionary factors might play a role. In ancient times, hair color could have been a visible indicator of age and fertility, with lighter hair associated with youthfulness and increased reproductive potential. The psychologists also posit that media representation, particularly the over-representation of blondes in the media over the decades, may have influenced and shaped contemporary perceptions of desirability.

In conclusion, this study sheds light on the intricate interplay between evolutionary psychology, societal influences, and individual preferences, offering a nuanced understanding of how hair color can impact perceptions in the realm of dating and long-term relationships.
