How to Measure a Suit Jacket?

  • Chest: The chest is the most important part of the body when it comes to finding the right size for your sport coat, suit jacket or blazer. Measure around the fullest part of your chest. Hold the measuring tape just under your arms and then extend around your shoulder blades. Remember to hold the tape level and parallel to ground.
  • Waist:Measure just below your waist at the height where you normally wear your pants (approx. 1 inch below your belly button). Ideally, keep one finger between the measuring tape and your body.
  • Sleeve:Measure from the center of the back of your neck, over your shoulder, down the outside of your arm to your wrist. It’s best if you bend your arm slightly while measuring.
  • Neck: Wrap the measuring tape around your neck while keeping a finger between the measuring tape and your neck. Alternatively, take a shirt that fits you well, particularly in the collar, lay out flat, and measure from the center of the collar button to the end of the collar buttonhole.

FAQ

Blazer vs. Sport Coat

Blazers and sport coats, while similar, serve different purposes in men’s fashion. A blazer is more formal than a sport coat and offers great versatility, often forming part of a business casual look. They’re typically standalone pieces, not paired with matching pants like a suit jacket, and come in a variety of fabrics and colors today. Sport coats are less formal than blazers, originally designed for outdoor activities like hunting. They’re made from robust fabrics like tweed and often feature more colorful and pronounced patterns. Check our suit jacket guide for more information.

Blazer vs. Suit Jacket

Blazers and suit jackets, though both essential pieces in a man’s wardrobe, have distinct differences. A suit jacket, as part of a set, is usually more formal and made from finer, matching fabric with the trousers. It’s traditionally worn in professional or formal settings. On the other hand, a blazer is a standalone piece offering versatility. It doesn’t come with matching pants, making it less formal than a suit jacket. Its design allows it to be paired with different types of pants and shirts, suitable for a semiformal or business casual look. So, while a suit jacket underscores formality and uniformity, a blazer offers flexibility and variety in styling. Check our suit jacket guide for more information.
