How to find your Jacket Size

  • To find a jacket that’s the perfect fit, you’ll need to carefully measure various parts of your body, most importantly, your (1) chest and (2) height. If you are not standard size and symmetrically shaped, then you’ll also want to measure your (3) sleeve, (4) shoulder, (5) waist, and (6) jacket length. Once you have these measurements, refer to the jacket size chart provided in this article to learn your corresponding clothing size.
  • For overcoats, intended mainly for wear over a suit, add an extra 1-2 inches to your jacket measurement. For raincoats, usually worn even more loosely, you can easily tack on up to 4 inches, depending on your preferred fit.
  • For women, European sizes fall into one of three size groups: (1) normal (65- to 68-inch body height), (2) short (body height of less than 65 inches), and (3) long (body height above 68 inches).
  • Men’s European sizes are divided into standard (body height of 63 to 81 inch), slim (body height between 68 and 78 inches) and small.

Jacket Measurement Guide

How to measure for a man’s jacket size

All measurements should be taken close to the body, “loosely snug” but not constrictive. Please remember not to measure over bulky outerwear. Basically, you want to wear what you normally would under the jacket. And like a tango, taking your measurements will work a lot better with two people.

  • Chest:The circumference of the chest is the most important measurement for jacket size. This is one of those times when it will prove a lot easier with that second person helping. Lift your arms up somewhat past parallel to the floor to wrap the tape measure around your chest at the broadest point. Allow no more than a maximum of one inch of slack in the tape. For casual jackets, you can add a second inch.
  • Waist: The waist is measured in the same way as described above for the chest, but this time the tape encircles the torso approximately at the navel.
  • Jacket length:The ideal jacket length for you will obviously depend to a great degree on the type of jacket you want to purchase. Standard jacket sizes are made for standard bodies. If you are shorter or taller than average, you’ll need to measure your upper body. Standing straight and upright, measure with the tape measure from the top of your shoulder. For a blazer, measure down to the top of the thigh; for a longer coat, measure to just above the knee.

How do you measure for a woman’s jacket size?

US Jacket & Coat Size Chart: Men, Women, Kids; Measuring Tip (4)

As in the men’s measurement, all dimensions should be measured close to the body and over the clothes you would normally wear beneath the jacket.

  • Chest: Again, as mentioned above, the chest circumference is the most important body dimension for jacket measurement. Stand up straight. Lift your arms and ask your trusted measuring partner to wrap the tape measure around your chest area. Make sure the tape measure has a little room (maximum of an inch) to move. Depending on the type of jacket (casual vs. formal) you can add an inch (casual can be looser). Measure horizontally around the body at the broadest part of the chest with a tape measure.
  • Hip: Once again, measurement is taken in the same way as above for the chest, but at the hips. Measure horizontally at the widest point of the hips.
  • Height:Please take off your shoes for a more precise measurement from head to toe. Simply stand up straight, back against a wall, hold a ruler horizontally across the top of the head and make a mark where it intersects the wall. Measure vertically from the mark to the floor. The door frame is the ever-popular measuring place, where the height marks may be observed for posterity, kind of like cave paintings.

Exceptions for Some European Jacket Sizes

In some cases, the jacket sizes for Europeans diverge from their American counterparts. More detailed information about European Sizes can be found here. Depending on your body height, the European jacket size falls into one of the following three groups:

  • Normal, for a 65- to 68-inch (165-172 cm) body height and corresponding to European clothing sizes from 32 to 62.
  • Short, for a body height of less than 65 inches (165 cm), equivalent to European clothing to sizes from 16 to 29.
  • Long, for body heights above 68 inches (172 cm) paralleling European clothing sizes from 68 to 116.

Men’s sizes are divided into normal, slim and small. Jackets are available for three distinct figure types:

  • Standard: For those with a body height of 63-81 inch (160-206 cm) and average proportions, jackets in the “Standard” category of European sizes 40 to 78 should fit correctly.
  • Small: In this category, you will find the matching jacket for smaller and proportionally slightly stouter men. The jackets are usually generously cut. Tailored models are unusual. For slightly smaller men, the jacket should end at hip height.
  • Slim: Men with a slightly narrower chest and a body height between 68 and 78 inches (174-197 cm) are best suited with the slimmer European sizes 88 to 114. They also offer a wide range of wearing options for varying weather conditions.

Tips for Coat Measurement

As coats are usually a costlier investment, you quite likely will want it to last longer. So making sure the fit is exactly right is more important than ever. Coats are normally worn over different combinations of clothing (e.g., suits, sweaters, sometimes even jackets). So it is critical that the chosen coat does not end up being too tight.

For those more formal overcoats worn most often with a suit beneath, add 1-2 inches onto your coat measurements. For raincoats, you can easily add up to 4 inches, depending on your preferred style.
