Princess Leonor of Spain, born on October 31, 2005, is the heiress presumptive to the Spanish throne, and the elder daughter of King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain. The Princess of Asturias, Leonor, is currently pursuing 3 years long Military training after finishing International Baccalaureate at UWC Atlantic in Wales, UK in May 2023. Leonor has a younger sister Infanta Sofia.
As the first in the line of succession and heiress presumptive, Leonor holds the Title of Princess of Asturias, Princess of Girona and Princess of Viana. She also holds the titles of duch*ess of Montblanc, Countess of Cervera and Lady of Balaguer. If and when Princess Leonor becomes the Queen of Spain she will be the first Spanish Queen Regnant since Isabella II, who reigned from 1833 to 1868.
Leonor’s birth was a critical caesarean section and she stayed at the hospital with her Mother Queen Letizia, the then Princess of Asturias, for a week and was discharged from the hospital on November 07 in 2005. At the time of her birth, Leonor was titled, Infanta Leonor. Infanta is the Spanish version of Princess.
Infanta Leonor was christened at the Royal Palace of Zarzuela by the Archbishop of Madrid using the water from the Jordan River in a romanesque baptismal font that has been used to christen Spanish Princes and Princesses since the 17th century. Felipe’s parents, the then King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofia are Leonor’s Godparents.

Felipe and Letizia chose Escuela Infantil Guardia Real as the daycare for their firstborn where she joined the children of the Spanish Royal Guards – a special regiment of the Spanish Armed Forces that protect the King of Spain and members of the Spanish Royal Family. In September 2008, Princess Leonor began her formal education at the Santa María de los Rosales School. Her Father King Felipe VI also studied at the same school.
Although Santa María de los Rosales School does not rank among the highly sought schools in Spain, it offered Felipe and both of his daughters a relatively normal school life where they were able to study without the prying eyes of the media and the public.
Princess Leonor’s first official engagement was in May 2014 when she joined her parents for a visit to San Javier Air Force base in Murcia. In June 2014, King Juan Carlos I abdicated the throne in favour of his son, Prince Felipe who became King Felipe VI.
After her father’s accession to the throne, Infanta Leonor became the Princess of Asturias – heiress presumptive. An interesting fact about her claim to the Spanish throne is that the Spanish line of Succession falls under the male-preference cognatic primogeniture as per the Spanish Constitution. That means if King Felipe VI has a legitimate son while he is on the throne, that son will become heir apparent and Leonor will revert to being Infanta Leonor. She is heiress presumptive only which means as the eldest child of the Monarch she is first in the line of succession as long as the Monarch does not have a legitimate son.
The Princess of Asturias, Leonor, received her first Communion on May 20, 2015. She received the Order of Fleece on her 10th birthday and was officially presented with the collar of the Golden Fleece in 2018 on the 50th birthday of her father King Felipe VI.
The year also saw many other big milestones in the Royal journey of Princess Leonor:
- First official visit to the Kingdom of Asturias
- Princess Leonor gave her first public speech in October 2018 on her 13th birthday which also coincided with the 40th anniversary of the Spanish constitution where she read the first article of the Constitution of Spain.
In October 2019, Princess Leonor made her official debut at the annual Princess of Asturias Awards. Leonor presented the awards and gave her first speech at the annual event. Less than a month later, she presented the Princess of Girona Foundation awards in Barcelona and made another speech.
The Future Queen of Spain is reportedly fluent in different languages. We have already seen her conversing confidently in Spanish and English on many occasions. She is said to be good at Catalan, Arabic, Mandarin and French also. Princess Leonor of Spain is a member of an American summer camp where she practices tennis, sailing and gymnastics and is also an accomplished cellist.
The Royal Palace of Zarzuela announced in February 2021 that Princess Leonor would be heading to UWC Atlantic College in Wales in August 2021 for a 2 year International Baccalaureate. To ensure the privacy of the Princess in the UK, the Royal Palace shared pictures from her departure and arrival at the college.
Princess Leonor undertook her first solo engagement in March 2021 and visited Cervantes Institute in Madrid.
In September 2022 it was revealed that the Future Queen of Spain, Princess Leonor will be heading for Military training with all three branches of the military after completing IB Program at Wales in May 2023 before starting University.
