Royal Family makes 'several outfit changes' on Christmas Day (2024)

Queen: Royal family hoping ‘Christmas as normal’ says pundit

Royal biographer Angela Levin appeared on Good Morning Britain to talk about Meghan Markle’s upcoming interview on the Ellen DeGeneres Show. In the interview, Angela mentioned how at Christmas, the Royal Family change outfits five times a day at Sandringham during the Christmas period. She also said how the royals cannot start to eat before The Queen, and nor can they go to bed before she does.

Angela mentioned these facts as reasons why Meghan left the UK because she was more interested in “global issues”.

However, it is true the royals change several times a day during Christmas at Sandringham.

The festive season is a busy social time for many Britons, and the Queen is no exception.

With many duties to attend to and numerous events to host, Queen Elizabeth needs an appropriate wardrobe to match.

And this can get rather extensive, with Royal Dresser Angela Kelly revealing the Queen can undergo up to seven outfit changes a day during the festive period.

In her book, ‘The Other Side of the Coin: The Queen, the Dresser and the Wardrobe’, Angela Kelly, whose official title is Her Majesty’s Personal Adviser and Curator, gave readers an intimate glimpse into the monarch’s life.

Angela said in the book: “There may be several outfit changes in one day – it could be as many as five or even up to seven.”

Following afternoon tea or a dog walk, the 95-year-old monarch selects her outfit for the evening.

Angela continued: “I lay out sketches of evening dresses for the Queen to look through and choose what she would like to wear that evening and, occasionally, she may have to pick out a dress for a co*cktail party”.

She then reportedly passes on the outfit details to guests and ladies-in-waiting via the means of “a handwritten notice… pinned up in the Dressers’ Corridor detailing what she will be wearing”.

This ensures “the Queen’s ladies’ maids can select an appropriate dress for the lady they are looking after”.

However, Angela insisted the monarch is relaxed if a fashion ‘faux pas’ happens to occur.

She said: “When it comes to the Royal Family, it doesn’t matter if they wear the same colour as the Queen because they are family.

“Other guests though, feel they shouldn’t be in the same colour as Her Majesty, although the Queen would not mind if this did happen”.

Angela also revealed the origins of dressing for dinner at Sandringham, stating it was a practice favoured by the Queen Mother, and that “the Queen has followed her example”.

It is also true that the royals tend not to go to bed before Her Majesty.

According to Sir William Heseltine, one of the Queen's former private secretaries, it is considered bad form to go to bed before Her Majesty.

"Nobody felt it right to go to bed before the Queen did,” Sir William revealed in an interview for the book ‘The Royals in Australia.’

Of course, not every royal was a fan of this rule.

According to Sir William, Princess Diana struggled to stay up as late as the Queen, who apparently can be quite the night owl.

"For Diana the long royal evenings were agony. There'd be an hour or so in the sitting room of everyone sitting around making conversation,” he said.

"And Diana was driven to such extremes that she'd excuse herself and go to bed, which was thought to be rather bad form, going to bed before the Queen.”
