When you go in for that Hollywood movie-style kiss with that special someone, do you close your eyes? Well, scientists have revealed why we nearly always choose to do so – and it’s all to do with our brain.

Psychologists from Royal Holloway, University of London have revealed that when people go in for a smooch, their brain finds it difficult to process the sensation if cognitive power is also being used to analyse what we see.

Basically what this means is that in order for us to fully enjoy that passionate kiss, we automatically close our eyes so our brain can concentrate.

‘If we are focusing strongly on a visual task, this will reduce our awareness of stimuli in other senses,’ Dr Polly Dalton told The Sunday Times. The study analysed people’s aptitude when conducting visual tests while someone was touching their hands.

‘'These results could explain why we close our eyes when we want to focus attention on another sense,’ she added. ‘Shutting out the visual input leaves more mental resources to focus on other aspects of our experience.'

So there you go, next time you pucker up with your eyes closed, it’s because your brain REALLY wants to concentrate.
