Set up Google Assistant on your device - Android (2024)

Languages you can use

On Android devices, the Google Assistant is available in Arabic, Bengali, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Gujarati, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Kannada, Korean, Malayalam, Marathi, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Portuguese (Portugal), Russian, Spanish, Swedish,Tamil, Telugu, Thai,Turkish, Urdu, and Vietnamese. More languages are coming soon.

What you need

To use the Google Assistant, you’ll need a device with:

  • Android 5.0+ with at least 1.0GB of available memory or
  • Android 6.0+ with at least 1.5GB of available memory
  • Google app 6.13 or higher
  • Google Play services
  • 720p or higher screen resolution
  • Device's language set to a language listed above

Check your Google app version

  1. On your device, open the Google app Set up Google Assistant on your device - Android (1).
  2. On the Home screen, tap Menu Set up Google Assistant on your device - Android (2) Set up Google Assistant on your device - Android (3) Settings Set up Google Assistant on your device - Android (4) About.
  3. Look for the version number at the top.
  4. If your version is below 6.13, go to the Google app page, then tap Update.

Check if you have Google Play services

  1. On your device, go to the Google Play services page.
  2. Tap Install. If you find "Uninstall" or "Deactivate," you already have Google Play services.

Start a conversation

  1. On your device, touch and hold the Home button or say "Hey Google." If the Google Assistant is off, you'll be asked to turn it on.
  2. Ask a question or say a command.

Tip: On devices running Android 8.0 and up, you can also talk to the Google Assistant when your device is locked by saying "Hey Google." Learn how to control what information displays on your lock screen.

Other ways to reach your Assistant

Type

  1. On your device, touch and hold the Home button.
  2. Tap Keyboard Set up Google Assistant on your device - Android (5).
  3. Enter a question or command Set up Google Assistant on your device - Android (6) Send Set up Google Assistant on your device - Android (7).

Open the Google Assistant app

First, get the Google Assistant app.

  1. On your device, open the Google Assistant app Set up Google Assistant on your device - Android (8).
  2. Ask a question or say a command.

Squeeze your phone (Pixel 2, 3, 3a & 4)

  1. Squeeze the bottom half of your phone.
  2. Ask a question or say a command.

Press & hold the Power button

  • On Pixel 6 and later, including Fold, press and hold the Power button.
  • If you have a Pixel 4aor later, including Fold, that runs Android 12 and up and want to talk to Assistant with the power button, open device Settings Set up Google Assistant on your device - Android (9) System Set up Google Assistant on your device - Android (10) Gestures Set up Google Assistant on your device - Android (11) Press and hold power button.

Choose how to communicate with Google Assistant

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, say "Hey Google, open Assistant settings."
  2. Under "All settings," tap General Set up Google Assistant on your device - Android (12) Preferred input.
  3. Choose your preferred input.
    • To say your question or command: Tap Voice.
    • To type your question or command: Tap Keyboard.

Tip: On Pixel 6 and later, including Fold, you can talk to Assistant without saying “Hey Google” for some tasks. Learn how to turn on Quick phrases.
