​What is Barbie doll syndrome?​

"It is a phenomenon in which individuals experience heightened insecurities due to unrealistic beauty standards set by the media and society," explains psychotherapist Dr. Chandni Tugnait on Instagram. Following are some of the symptoms:

​Eating disorders​

Eating disorders are characterized by severe and persistent disturbance in eating behaviors and associated distressing thoughts and emotions.

​Anxiety​

Individuals, especially young girls, with this condition may feel anxious and disgusted by their bodies.

​Depression​

The condition can cause depression when an individual is unable to look like Barbie.

​Shame​

Obsession with Barbie's "perfect" body can contribute to body dissatisfaction and shame.

​Body dysmorphic disorder​

It is a mental illness in which the patient obsessively focuses on a perceived flaw in their appearance. The flaw may be minor or imagined.
