The Sports
There are 7 different sports you can play. The different sports have leagues that are played in different countries.
- American Football (United States)
- Baseball (United States)
- Basketball (United States)
- Hockey (United States)
- Soccer (For men: United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Germany, Brazil. For women: United States, United Kingdom)
- Rugby (Australia, United Kingdom)
- Volleyball (United States)
New Athletic Skills & Stats
Becoming a professional athlete gets you the "Fame" stat.
While, previously, the athleticism skills only affected whether or not you were able to enter certain sports clubs in school, now they are a core functionality to becoming a professional athlete! They are similar to the musical talent— they decide how effective training your individual skills as an athlete will be and are the starting point for these very skills. These skills can be honed under Job > Professional Athlete > Practice. You need only work on each of them only once a year for it to be effective. There are different skills depending on which sport you're playing:
- American Football, Quarterback Position: Celebrations, Passing, Rushing
- Baseball, First Baseman: Base Running, Catching, Celebrations, Fielding, Hitting, Throwing
- Basketball Player: Celebrations, Defending, Dribbling, Passing, Rebounding, Shooting, Tricks
- Hockey, Winger Position: Celebrations, Defending, Passing, Shooting, Skating, Stick Handling, Tricks
- Soccer Player: Celebrations, Defending, Dribbling, Headers, Passing, Shooting, Tricks
- Volleyball Player: Blocking, Bumping, Celebrations, Digging, Serving, Setting, Spiking
Practicing Those Skills
Though not exactly distinct in function, practicing different ones will appear on your timeline different. For example: "My teammates and I spent 55 minutes coordinating a choreographed celebration performance." after practicing your celebrations skill, and "You and your team spent 35 minutes improving your zonal marking strategies." after practicing your defending skill. There's a chance you might get injured in the process, though, in which case you can choose to undergo physical therapy or surgery. Undergoing physical therapy may or may not cure your injury— if that's the case, you can proceed to surgery. Though you will miss out on some games, you won't have to play through a painful injury as such a a broken ankle or stubbed toe. You can also get injured from a random scenario. If this happen, you can play through the game even with the injury or pick from physical therapy or surgery again. The results are the same: playing through it will either have you stop in the middle of the game and need immediate care, play through the whole game and win/lose, or just have to stop immediately and need care)!
Other Skills
There are also the Greatness, Fitness and Respect skills or stats. Greatness is an overview of all your sports-related stats. Fitness can also be honed under Job > Professional Athlete > Train and picking Balance, Cardio, Flexibility, or Strength. Unlike the ones under Practice, they don't have individual stats, but instead add up to the more general Fitness stat. Respect is influenced by whether or not you're caught doping or accepting a bribe, and your interactions with fans.
Starting Your Sports Career
It's highly recommended you start off your career with a character with a naturally high athleticism stat! Usual indicators of this include text popping up on your timeline detailing things like you getting in trouble for throwing things in the house a little too far and others in the same vein. When you get into secondary or middle school is when you can really judge how high it is— then is also the time you pick the sport you want to play professionally in the future.
After your join the appropriate club, you're going to want to work harder each year to keep performance up. You should study hard as well to avoid getting kicked for poor grades. While natural athleticism is important, you can also keep it up by going to the gym and practicing any martial art technique! When you reach high school/upper secondary school, you should rejoin the sport club and continue keeping your stats up.
After graduating and turning 18, you may receive a pop-up saying that you have been offered an athletic scholarship or a deal with a team for you to sign, and emigrate to whichever country that league is in (your partner and/or kids will come with you if they wish, just like a regular emigration). Accepting the athletic scholarship will get you into university for free, though it won't do much in your future sports career, so you shouldn't be choosing that. You should choose to accept an offer that a certain team wants you to sign, though, as it will mark the beginning of your career as a professional athlete! While your skills will start a bit low, you can train them every year, and eventually you can be part of the championing team.
If you don't receive any of these offers, though, it's fine— you can still access the job under Job > Special Careers > Professional Sports > Whichever league you want to enter > Whichever team. Be aware that it's generally harder to get in if you aren't approached by a recruiter, though.
Sinister Activities
Aside from training, there are other, more... sinister... ways to get a higher league standing. You can start doping under Performance Enhancer (Get a chemical boost), which doesn't give you a visible indication, but does increase your chances of having a higher "Greatness" stat next year, and winning the championship if your team is in the runners-up (there is also a random scenario where you catch a teammate doping in the locker room and you can ask to share, though it's not clear whether the game counts this or not). However, there may be a random scenario calling for a doping test; then, you can submit yourself for testing (and get banned for 5 years in consequence!), ask someone else to test in your place (they may say no and get you banned, or say yes), or refuse to test. This'll get you banned from competing for 3 years.
You can also get the random pop-up for a Mafioso or someone similar offering some cash to play poorly so another team can win. The bribe can be a pretty hefty price, and you may be tempted to accept— however, if you are caught, you could get banned from the leagues completely! There are other options, such as decline but turn a blind eye, or report them to the authorities. That last option might get you beaten up by the mafia, but it'll keep your respect at an alright level; which isn't something you could say if you were to be caught.
Interacting with Other Teams
While, unfortunately, there is no way for you to interact with your fellow team members, you can interact with other teams to an extent! You can request a trade-off with another team where you, essentially, ask for another team to take over your contract for the rest of the years left in it. If your greatness is high enough, depending on the team's own strength and standing, you could have your offer accepted; if not, it'll be refused, but there are no deeper consequences for being refused.
You can also view other teams' standings and team strength, along with who is the current champion, under Job > Professional Athlete > League.
Regularly, scenarios regarding your team members and other teams' members will pop up as well, for example; an opponent may trash-talk you on the field (you can respond with an insult, ignore them, or blow them a kiss), your team may have assigned you to help your coach lose their V-card (you can "do it yourself", get them a dating app, hire an escort, etc), or a team member may have organised an orgy and invited you (happens whether or not you have a spouse!) (you can attend and be the star, attend and play only a minor part, attend but not participate very much, or go home).
Achievements Unlockable
With the new update, a new category of achievements was added: Sports. This includes Canton, Cristiano, Full Ride, Giggsy, Hooker, and Lance.
The Canton achievement regards the Football Hall of Fame. You could be added to this as a football player by achieving very high greatness, respect, and general skills. The Cristiano achievement regards the Ballon d'Or, an award given annually to individual players who are regarded as the greatest players of the year. The Full Ride achievement regards the athletic scholarship mentioned in the Starting Your Sports Career section. The Giggsy achievement regards career championships, which are won by being in a team with a very high strength stat and having good stats yourself. The Hooker achievement regards the hooker position in football/rugby. Lastly, the Lance achievement regards the action of doping mentioned in the Sinister Activities section.
Instructions and more details on completing these achievements are found in the achievements page linked above.
