Doors can be quite the statement piece in your home. They offer more than just a way to enter and leave a room or home. The right entry door can improve curb appeal from the outside and the overall appearance and aesthetics of your entire home. But before you get into style and look, you need to talk size. Understanding what size you need is the first step to getting the perfect doors for every entry throughout your home.

Standard Door Width
The standard door width can vary, since there is a ton of variety in sizes and styles of doors. But the standard common door width for US homes is 36 inches. Other very easy-to-find sizes are 30 and 32 inches. Note that when measuring the width of a door, the measurement reflects only the door panel alone, not the frame surrounding it.
Standard Interior Door Width
Interior doors are any of the doors that are inside your home. International Residential Code sets minimum height and weight requirements. Width for most standard interior doors can range between 28 and 32 inches. Of course, custom door sizes can be very different.
Standard Interior Door Height
Code generally requires interior standard door sizes to have a certain height. It needs to be a minimum of 80 inches (although some codes allow for 78 inch doors). Doors that have a height of 80 inches are 6 foot, 8 inches in measurement, which is the reason standard interior doors are known as “6/8 doors.” A 78 inch door would be called a 6/6 door.
Standard Exterior Door Width
Exterior doors can be much larger than interior ones, but still, their width is most often 36 inches. That said, you can also find exterior doors that are smaller, coming in a standard size of 30 or 32 inch width.
Standard Exterior Door Height
Entry or exterior doors must have a height of 80 inches minimum. They can go up to 96 inches in standard sizing, and, again, custom doors could be even taller.
Sliding Glass Door Sizes
Sliding glass doors generally have a standard size when it comes to height, but the width can vary depending on where in your home you’re installing the door and how big the opening is. Most often, builders will create door frame areas that are standard sizes so that, should you ever need one, a replacement would be easier to find.
Height
Sliding glass doors are usually fixed at a height of 80 inches tall. Again, unless you’re creating a custom opening during the build, this is a pretty standard height. You likely won’t have much, if any trouble finding the right size.
Width
The width of a sliding door can vary. Most doors are anywhere from 60 to 72 inches, but there are many options available. And remember, if you’re doing multiple panels beyond the standard two panel door, you could go even wider.
French Door Sizes
French doors are sometimes called French windows, and they can come in many different sizes. It’s important to measure and get the size right, so you don’t have to do a bunch of additional work to get the doors to fit in your space. There are a range of sizes that are standard for French doors, but most often, each door is between 30 and 72 inches wide. French doors are generally sold as a pair.
Closet Doors
Closet doors and utility doors are often smaller than both entry or interior standard doors are. Closet doors in older homes (those built before the 1990s) could come as narrow as just 18 inches. However, newer builds often have a wider width of about 30 inches, and they could go up to 96 inches in height.
