Hulu’s dystopian show has been shocking audiences with major cliffhangers and mind-blowing twists since it first premiered in 2017. However, this new spoiler teases that Serena Joy (played by Yvonne Strahovski) could lose her baby in what could be the most deserved turn in all of The Handmaid’s Tale. Serena Joy Waterford was introduced to viewers as the wife of Commander Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes). Together they obtained June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) as a Handmaid and it was her duty to conceive for the couple as Serena was seemingly infertile.
In Gilead, the Handmaid’s were forced to take part in the Ceremony, which was an important ritual where Commanders would rape their Handmaid whilst the Wife held them down in hopes of conceiving. As the global birth rate was in decline, Gilead prided themselves on using the Ceremony to remedy the effect and fruitful Handmaids in high regard. After noticing that Fred’s attempts were unsuccessful, Serena suggested that his driver Nick Blaine (Max Minghella) should secretly impregnate June. June became pregnant however later in the series, she was able to help the baby escape Gilead after she gave birth.
In a shocking turn of events in season four, Fred and Serena were placed in custody under Canadian law when they crossed the border. Serena had betrayed Fred and turned him in for his crimes committed in Gilead, all in hopes of seeing baby Nichole again. However, Fred flipped the script and let the state know about Serena’s involvement in establishing the Gileadean state, and she too was charged and held in custody. Whilst awaiting trial Serena made the shocking discovery that she was pregnant with Fred’s baby.

With June living free in Canada, her witness statement threatened the prospects of Serena becoming the mother she so desperately wanted to be. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, actress Yvonne Strahovski revealed that Serena could in fact lose her sought-after baby: "It is hard to trust her because you see the wheels turning in her brain even when she's begging for forgiveness from June." In episode seven titled Home, Serena and June were reunited, Serena was begging and pleading for forgiveness whilst June was full of rage and screamed in her face telling her she hoped her baby dies. Yvonne continues: "I think there's a huge genuine part of her that really does want that forgiveness, but it's purely for selfish reasons.
“I think she believes that God is going to turn around and kill her baby if she doesn't beg for forgiveness, it's not because she is really that sorry, I don't think." Serena losing her baby could be the payback she receives for her role in establishing Gilead. Handmaids who were mothers before Gilead had their children taken away from them and they were placed in a different home, forbidden all contact. In the most recent episode fans watched as Serena battled with the thought of returning to Gilead or staying in Canada if they were to gain freedom.
However, with this new spoiler, it looks as though, Serena may not even keep her child. Fans will have to wait until the next episode to see if this will come true. The Handmaid’s Tale is available to stream on Hulu
After having her son, Noah, with a major assist from June, she is sent to an immigration detention center and her child is put into the Wheelers' care. It's not hard to imagine that the Wheelers will eventually try to take full custody of Noah, especially since they keep implying Serena is not a fit mother.
The Waterfords were previously believed to both be infertile. Fred had failed to get both June and a previous handmaid pregnant, despite many attempts even outside Gilead's "ceremony". Serena was shot in her lower abdomen by a protester in the days before Gilead, and her injuries damaged her reproductive organs.
She wasn't going to allow this newborn to potentially die if something goes wrong. In the end, the baby is born…alive. He looks good, and Serena chooses the name Noah.
After being taken into custody, Serena is separated from her son. No one ever warned us that Serena getting what has been coming to her for five seasons of The Handmaid's Tale would feel, well, not quite as satisfying. Granted, fans still want her to pay and want her to acknowledge all that she put June through.
Now an immigration prisoner who is locked up in a Canadian detention center, Serena, who had newborn son Noah pulled from her arms to end episode seven, is forced to pump and hand over her breast milk to the woman who is now the legal guardian of her son, Mrs. Wheeler (Genevieve Angelson).
Although Serena initially had a gun on June, forcing her to drive after she fled the Wheelers' home, when she goes into labor, June opts to help her first through the physical pain and then the emotional pain when Serena tells June to take the baby because she has no future.
Following the pregnancy announcement, some Handmaid's Tale fans wondered whether Mrs. Waterford cheated on Fred. But it's likely Fred is the father of Serena's baby. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Bruce Miller explained why Fred and Serena were finally able to conceive.
In the story, an environmental disaster has led to most women becoming infertile, and the small number who are still able to become pregnant are forced to become handmaids, women who are owned by the ruling elite and systematically raped in order to provide them with children.
Serena staying in Gilead was never an option for her for several reasons, the first being that her husband is a known traitor. It's likely that the Commanders at least assume that she is a traitor, too, although they have yet to indicate whether they know this. Serena also being pregnant and unwed is another factor.
Arriving in a private jet, Serena struts her way off the plane as if she's the damn queen of Gilead. But she quickly learns that the funeral Gilead has in mind for Fred is, er, a lot less spectacular than what she wanted. Seems they're not big fans of Fred either.
Although her agency was eventually stripped away, Serena played a fundamental role in the creation of Gilead. Pre-Gilead, she worked as a vessel for God's word, where her far-right activism ended up being the blueprint Fred took credit for.
Aunt Lydia confirms that "Jade" is Nicole through a tattoo and discloses her true identity and parentage to Agnes and Becka. Revealing herself as Mayday's mole, Aunt Lydia enlists the three young women to smuggle incriminating information about Gilead's elite into Canada.
She is a woman in her 30s who was forced to serve as a Handmaid in the early years of Gilead, due to the fact she is still capable of bearing children. She is the wife of Luke Bankole and the mother of a young daughter, Hannah. She is also the mother of Nichole who she had with Nick in Gilead.
The Handmaid didn't lose the baby because she allowed herself to be caught by the Waterfords, who were desperately searching for her. Offred/June made the heartbreaking decision for the sake of both her children and to keep Holly safe and healthy - something that a life on the run could never guarantee.
The day after giving birth to her daughter, Williams was short of breath. Having experienced blood clots in the past, she had no doubt that she was struggling with a life-threatening pulmonary embolism. The trouble was no one believed her.
June Osborne getting out of Gilead was season four's major move forward. After several failed and rejected escape attempts over the seasons, June finally stepped foot on Canadian soil and claimed asylum. She reunited with her loved ones and was safe.
But in the end, June does take Serena and Noah to the hospital. Once there, however, unbeknownst to June at first, Luke (O-T fa*gbenle) calls the authorities. Serena is detained by Canadian immigration and since she's an undocumented person, she doesn't have the immediate right to a lawyer.
