Purchasing a winter coat seems easy enough, until you’re the guy standing in Macy’s on Black Friday, playing tug-o’-war with a teenage boy who also wants to purchase the last parka in the store. That is, it doesn’t seem important until it is, and then it’s really, really important. To this end, we asked Michelle Goad, co-founder of personal shopping app PS Dept., to find out how her team of expert shoppers sleuths out the perfect winter coat for their male clients. Here’s what she said:
Play for Keeps
“A coat is something you'll have for years, so it's something you should spend money on. Don’t cheap out. Don’t buy synthetic fabrics. Choose a timeless style. Following trends means you’ll be buying again next season.”
Buy a Size That Fits Your Wardrobe
“We often encourage guys to size up when it comes to outerwear. If your coat is snug with a blazer or a sweater underneath, you should go for a bigger size. If the sleeves are too long, you can always get them tailored. It’s worth the effort.”
Assess the Warmth Factor
“If your daily dress code requires a more tailored coat, choose something made from cashmere or natural animal hair. You will be freezing in wool. Also look for convertible options like a removable vest, inner jacket, or a hidden hood.”
Pay Attention to the Bells and Whistles
“Check that the pockets—both external and internal—are comfortable and functional. And ask for extra buttons when you’re buying the coat—most stores will have extras if they aren’t already attached to the jacket. Outerwear buttons tend to loosen easily, and if you’re planning to keep the coat for a few seasons, you’ll need them.”
Know When to Shop
“Start your search early. Spring collections start shipping to stores in December, which means winter coats start clearing out of stores in November. And the best coats sell out long before that. Honestly, it’s easier to buy swim trunks than a warm coat in the dead of winter.”
