How do you find the perfect size jacket? ›

For a slimmer fit, choose a jacket size ~1″ smaller than your (body measurement) chest circumference. For a more relaxed, classic fit, choose the jacket size closest to your actual measured chest circumference.

Opt for a jacket that's 1 size larger than your shirt size.

This is the general advice for buying a jacket so that it won't be too tight. Having the jacket a little bigger than your normal size will also help to ensure that you can easily layer it over other items.

If you look at the size label of a suit, you will most likely see a double-digit followed by either S, R, or L. For example, 38L. The first number is the jacket chest size (which won't always match your actual chest measurement). The second is the jacket length.

Suit and sport coat sizes have one number and one letter (for example, 38S, 40R, 42L). The number is your chest measurement and the letter refers to the jacket's length ' short, regular or long. When buying a coat, it's always best to size up, even if you're not between sizes. This is so you can comfortably add a sweater or a fleece, if the weather takes a turn for the colder, have room at the neck for a scarf, and room in your pockets for your gloves.

Look at how much space is between you and the jacket. There should be just enough room for the layers you would normally wear underneath your coat; it should not look baggy or too loose on your body. Keep in mind that a coat that's too tight performs differently, too.

You should be able to button the top button of your jacket comfortably without any kind of unsightly pulling around the button. There should be a couple of inches of room at the waist, even on a fitted jacket, but any more than four inches means that it is a little big.

If in doubt, go with neutral, grey, black, or white. You can also look for jacket colors that match your skin tone. For example, if you have a cool skin tone, you'll look fabulous in colors with undertones of pink or navy blue. If you have warmer skin tones, try a jacket in brown or earthy tones.
