Thrift Stores & Average Income (2024)

Thrift stores, or shops that sell previously owned merchandise, have been called "recession-proof," meaning economic downturns don't really put a dent in their profit margins. But if you're considering launching your own thrift store, you might be wondering what kind of profit margins to expect in the first place – and what kind of salary a thrift store owner makes, as well.

Average Annual Revenue

The United States is home to more than 30,000 resale, consignment, thrift and antique shops, where consumers spend about $17 billion annually. The big-name chains in this industry can reel in billions of dollars annually – such as Goodwill, for example, which boasted more than $5.3 billion in retail sales in 2014. Crossroads Trading Company, a more modestly sized chain based in California's Bay Area, pulled in more than $20 million in sales in 2012.

For smaller thrift stores, however, revenue varies. In 1993, Dun's Census of American Business collected annual sales reports from nearly 27,000 used merchandise stores across the United States, and 87 percent of them pulled in less than $250,000 in annual sales. But the used merchandise industry has boomed since then, recently showing an average revenue of $120,000 per worker. This means a thrift store with a staff of three people would on average pull in $360,000 in annual revenue.

Salaries and Profits

While thrift stores usually obtain their inventory by donation or consignment, they – like any other business – still have their operational expenses. As the owner of a used merchandise retailer, you're responsible for your employees' salaries as well as insurance costs, rent, utilities and marketing.

Those expenses chip away at thrift stores' profits, and as of 2016, used merchandise retailers made a pretax profit of 3.3 percent – meaning that an average 10-person thrift store might generate only $11,880 in annual profits. That said, the average annual salary for a thrift shop manager hovers around $52,000.

Recession-Proof Business

The average profit margins for used merchandise retailers are relatively modest. On the bright side, however, thrift stores enjoy the privilege of holding steadfast in all types of economic conditions – the good and the bad.

This is so because in times of economic expansion, more people tend to donate inventory to thrift stores, and in times of recession, more people tend to shop at used merchandise retailers. For this reason, your thrift shop could enjoy steady success in both good economic conditions and bad.
