take it to a jeweler --- i take mine every couple of years, come sback sparkling and they check the setting ..about £20

fireflyfairy2 · 29/03/2007 21:47

I use toothpaste & an old toothbrush. Comes up a treat

PrincessPeaHead · 29/03/2007 21:47

most diamond dealers will recommend fairy liquid and a soft toothbrush

fairy liquid because it rinses off very cleanly without leaving any residue

thats what I use anyway.

def fairy liquid and toothbrush and silvo for the band. Worked in a jewellers as a student and cleaned hundreds. would disappear through back and clean them and customers always thought had used some amazing soluton or fancy machine. alays made me laugh

MIL has one of those ultrasonic jewellry cleaners (she's in the antiques business) so she does mine.

But this thread reminded me of something. My mum got her engagement ring in a shop in Bristol where my dad lived. They offered a lifetime of free cleaning, so even after they married, when visiting dad's family they would get it cleaned. This carried on for years (I remember being taken there). Anyway, all connections, therefore visits to Bristol ended years ago. Then mum and dad, for their ruby wedding, did a bit of a tour of the UK, taking in places from their past, including Bristol. So they found the jewellers and went in and got mum's ring cleaned, for free

i've used an electric toothbrush , worked very well

I personally just use fairy washing up liquid and a toothbrush on my jewellery but my mum always used to boil her diamond jewellery(which apparently you can only do if diamond)in a saucepan on the hob and they used to come up sparkling. She doesn't do this anymore, but now puts her rings in one of those washng nets(that you get with the tabs)and puts it in the dishwasher.
They come out really clean.

Mine's white gold - I assume it's too soft for co*ke? Diamonds and pink sapphires so it sounds like boiling it is out. I do have some vodka to hand though

yesireallycan · 30/03/2007 18:27

Soak it in neat gin, then rinse under the tap. A soft toothbrush if necessary to clean any fiddly bits.

paulaplumpbottom · 30/03/2007 20:52

Martha would never wear something so cheesy

Hopeitwontbebig · 31/03/2007 11:20

I always use toothpaste and a toothbrush on mine, my diamonds always come up a treat! I used to be a jeweller, but we didn't use toothpaste in the shop!!

sunnysideup · 31/03/2007 11:28

put away that old 'saved for cleaning' toothbrush, wait till you have had a row with your DH then use toothpaste and HIS toothbrush comes up a treat and has an added layer of satisfaction.
