What does "grey contact" mean on an iPhone? ›

If you're talking about the number that show up in auto-complete when you start typing a number in messages, blue are contacts with whom you've exchanged iMessages recently, green are those with whom you've exchanged SMS messages recently and grey are people with whom you have not exchanged messages recently.

The answer is simple; this is the expected behavior for received messages on the iMessage native app. The colored message bubbles are only notifiable on the sender's messages, not on the received messages. As long as your friends with iPhone see their sent messages as blue bubbles, all is ok.
