1 What are robo-advisors?
Robo-advisors are digital platforms that provide automated investment advice and portfolio management. They use software and algorithms to analyze your risk tolerance, time horizon, and financial objectives, and then create a diversified portfolio of assets that suits your profile. Some robo-advisors also offer additional services, such as tax optimization, rebalancing, retirement planning, and human support. Robo-advisors are popular among investors who want to save time, money, and hassle, while still benefiting from professional guidance and expertise.

2 How to compare robo-advisors?
When comparing robo-advisors, many factors should be taken into account. Fees, which can range from 0.15% to 0.50%, may include a minimum account balance, a flat fee, or other charges for specific features or services. Performance is dependent on the market conditions, asset allocation, and risk level of the portfolio and should be evaluated by looking at the historical performance, benchmarks, and volatility of the robo-advisor. Features such as tax-loss harvesting, automatic rebalancing, social responsibility investing, access to human advisors, and integration with other financial tools should also be compared. Additionally, customer satisfaction should be considered by evaluating phone, email, chat, or video customer service and support as well as reviews and ratings from other users regarding ease of use, transparency, security, and reliability.

4 How to choose the best robo-advisor for you?
Finding the best robo-advisor for you is not a one-size-fits-all solution. To make an informed decision, assess your financial situation and objectives, compare different robo-advisors based on fees, performance, features, and customer satisfaction, and start with a small amount of money to test the waters. Before signing up for any robo-advisor, you should be aware of your current net worth, income, expenses, debt, and savings. Additionally, define your investment goals to determine your risk tolerance, time horizon, and target return. You can use online tools such as comparison websites or calculators to compare robo-advisors. Additionally, read reviews and testimonials from other users to see how they match your expectations and preferences. Finally, take advantage of free trials, promotions, or bonuses that some robo-advisors offer to new customers.

Choosing the right robo-advisor involved a personalized approach for me. Initially, I assessed my financial situation, including my net worth, income, expenses, debt, and savings. Understanding my investment goals was crucial, as it helped me determine my risk tolerance, time horizon, and target return. I compared various robo-advisors, focusing on their fees, performance, features, and customer satisfaction. Online comparison tools and calculators were invaluable for this. I also read reviews and testimonials to gauge how well they aligned with my expectations. Starting with a small investment, I tested the waters before fully committing. I also looked out for free trials, promotions, or bonuses offered by some robo-advisors.

5 How to optimize your robo-advisor experience?
When you choose a robo-advisor and open an account, you can optimize your experience by regularly reviewing and updating your profile. This is important because your robo-advisor will create and manage your portfolio based on the information you provide. Additionally, you should diversify your portfolio across different asset classes to reduce risk and increase returns. Furthermore, reinvesting your dividends and interest can help you grow your wealth faster and achieve your goals sooner. Be aware of the fees, taxes, and liquidity of each asset class to ensure that they suit your needs and goals.

Robo advisors that offer tax loss harvesting have a major limitation - they do not have visibility into your other accounts outside of their platform. This is an issue because if a position is tax loss harvested by the robo and the same security is purchased in another account within 30 days, it can create a "wash sale". An innocent transaction like a reinvested dividend in a spouse's IRA could trigger a wash sale, for example. When a wash sale occurs, it affects the amount of loss that can be deducted as part of the tax loss harvest. However - it would likely go unreported for tax purposes and could cause problems for the investor if a future audit were to occur.

Be aware that robo advisors simply pick investments for you and don't answer broader financial questions like:- is my financial plan on track?- am I investing enough?- when can I retire?- how can I pay less in taxes?- am I taking full advantage of my employee benefits?- is my family protected if I die or become disabled?- etc.To ensure the above are taken care of, consider working with a financial planner.
