You can take a short cut and buy the bag of “caramel bits” instead of unwrapping caramels. You can make them a couple of days ahead, and they still taste soft, gooey, and delicious! You can even freeze them for later.
The flavor is close but not quite identical and the texture is slightly different. The square caramels have a slightly better taste and definitely have the expected soft chewy stuck-in-your teeth texture. The caramel bits have a texture, that while chewy, is not stuck-in-your-teeth sticky, which I think I prefer.
Once they melt you'll find they stick to parchment paper. I use the Kraft brand caramel bits but you can use any brand you'd like. Just be sure you are using bits instead of chews that you cut up. If you use chews they will burn while cooking.

- Preheat oven to 425°F.
