Hair loss is nothing new. Baldness in ancient times did exist so people have been searching for a long time for solutions to problems with their appearance, including hair loss. Before modern treatments, like ARTAS® Robotic Hair Restoration procedures, people tried all sorts of bizarre methods to cure hair loss.
According to the American Hair Loss Association, 95 percent of hair loss in men is caused by androgenetic alopecia. This inherited trait that tends to give guys a receding hairline and a thinning crown is caused by genetic sensitivity to a byproduct of testosterone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
There are racial differences, however, in the incidence of male pattern baldness. The highest rates are found among Caucasians, followed by Afro-Caribbeans. Chinese and Japanese men have the lowest rates. For some unknown reason, this form of hair loss is does not occur among Native Americans.

In Ancient Rome it was desirable for men to have a full head of hair. This was a problem for Julius Caesar. Being bald was considered a deformity at the time, so Caesar went to great pains to hiding his thinning hair.
Eunuchs do not go bald. Every white man possesses the autosomal inherited predisposition,4 and 96% lose hair to some degree,5 but because of the variabity of gene expression far fewer have appreciable premature hair loss.
To begin with the reason we have hair on top of our heads is it provides the scalp insulation from the sun, blocks UV light exposure, and provides cooling when sweat evaporates from soaked hair. So that at least explains what it is doing there.
Is balding part of evolution?
There isn't an evolutionary advantage or disadvantage in male pattern baldness, it's just one of those things. Nothing that happens after the usual age of reproduction can act much on evolution, and many things are neutral or disadvantageous.
Bald men are genetically more predisposed to be more sensitive to dihydrotestosterone, but the follicles on the chin are unaffected by the hormone, which is why beards continue to grow. As theories about the influence of testosterone have developed, so have various avenues of treatment.
A new study suggests that humans became hairless to reduce the risk of biting flies and other parasites that live in fur and to enhance their sexual attractiveness. Humans are rare among mammals for their lack of a dense layer of protective fur or hair.
East Asians are furthest from the Mediterranean region and also have the lowest rate of baldness which does not seem to be an accident. Incidentally, their baldness rate can range from 20% to the low 30s, which is still a significant portion of the population.
Caucasian, Asian and Indian hair samples were put to the test for the World's Best Hair study. Their results put an end to any splitting of hairs over the issue: in terms of health, the Indian hair is the best, topping other ethnic groups on all four counts.
