Who invented fashion draping?
The art of draping dates back to 3500 BCE, beginning with the Mesopotamians and Ancient Egyptians. Greek fashion followed with the invention of draped silhouettes like the chiton, peplos, chlamys and himation. The Etruscans and Ancient Romans invented the toga, a length of fabric that wraps and drapes around the body.
The process of positioning and pinning the fabric on a dress form is called draping. Draping can be used to create the basic pattern or to design organically by playing with the fabric on the form.
The biggest advantage of draping is that it allows for customization. It also results in less wastage of fabric wherein you only do trials before you actually cut the fabric. The process of draping also allows to make paper patterns and designs which can be used further for ideation of the next dress.

Some of the best examples of drapes are gathers, pleats, tucks and ruching. In a subject such as fashion designing, learning how to create different drapes can add immense beauty and style to a finished outfit.

Draping, the step following drafting, is the modeling of a muslin based fabric on a dress form or figure to better understand where it must be cut and where the markings must be made.
Pattern Making is a blueprint for the garment, on the basis of which the fabric is cut. It is the technical drawing or drafting of a garment. Standard size charts, dress forms or figure are measured, these measurements are then converted into 2D patterns and then garments are made from them.
When draping a garment, the designer can immediately see what her apparel design will look like on the body, and immediately correct any fit or design problems before putting anything down on paper. In addition, some apparel designs are just impossible to make via flat patternmaking and need to be draped first.
