If you crave the tough, dangerous look of metal fashion, you aren’t alone. Dressing metal can give you a little edge and allows you a chance to show off your individuality. While it might seem like a tricky style, it’s pretty easy to master once you know what to look for. Leather, denim and studs are your go-to for clothing and accessories. When it comes to hair and makeup, bold choices will give you the look you want.
Method 1
Method 1 of 3:
Assembling an Outfit
1
Wear band t-shirts or dark solid-color tees and tanks. The great thing about dressing metal is that picking a top is fairly easy. T-shirts with band logos and plain tees are the go-to look for many metalheads. Opt for shirts from your favorite bands, or stick to something basic, like a black tank top.[1]
- You might also choose t-shirts that are related to the music industry. For instance, you might wear a shirt from your favorite concert venue or a local bar that features live music.
- If you’re going for a plain tee or tank, pick dark colors like black, red, purple, or navy blue. Occasionally, you might wear a white shirt if you’re layering it under something.
Variation: Alter your shirts to make them more personalized. For instance, you could turn your shirt into a crop top, cut slits in the side, or cut a new neckline. You might even slice the shirt down the back and pin it back together with safety pins.
2
Opt for a leather or military jacket or vest when you want to add layers. Outerwear is popular when it comes to dressing metal. If it’s cold, choose a leather or military-style jacket. When it’s warm out, stick to a leather or denim vest.[2]
- To save money and boost your street cred, look for a used jacket or vest at a thrift shop or army supply store. You can find a cheaper jacket that looks well-worn.
- Add a few buttons or pins to your jacket or vest to make it more individualized.
- It’s okay to skip a jacket or vest, especially if it’s hot out.
3
Pick ripped jeans, black skinny jeans, or leather skinnies for pants. Dark colors are typically your best option, but ripped blue jeans can also work. Stick to skinny styles or straight leg pants, as baggier jeans are more common with grunge.[3]
- Add rips and holes to your jeans to add a little more edge.
4
Choose a denim, leather, or plaid skirt for a rocker girl look. If you want to add a girly touch to your look, wearing a skirt is a great option. Pick a mini or thigh-length skirt to get a metal vibe. For extra edge, look for a skirt that has studs or safety pins on it.[4]
- Take your style to the next level by adding fishnets, tights, or leggings. This can also help you stay warm if it’s a little cool out and add more coverage if you’re uncomfortable showing off a lot of leg.
5
Pair ripped denim shorts with black tights for a warm weather look. Frayed bottoms and slashes are both a great metal look. Opt for shorter shorts that are no lower than mid-thigh. Add tights or leggings to complete the look.[5]
- You don’t have to have rips or frayed ends. It’s okay of you just want to wear a pair of plain black or blue denim shorts.
Variation: Skip the tights if you prefer to keep your look simple or if you’re worried about sweating in the heat.
6
Opt for boots, Chucks, or spiked heels when it comes to shoes. Combat boots, biker boots, and Dr. Martens give you instant tough girl edge. If you’re feeling more casual, Converse or Vans sneakers are a great option for footwear. If you want to add a little feminine flair, try spiked or studded heels or ballet flats.[6]
- Choose shoes that are darker in color, like black boots or heels.
- Skip sneakers with prints, which could soften your edge.

Method 2 of 3:
Choosing Accessories
1
Cover your jacket, clothing, and bag with pins and buttons. Look for pins and buttons that feature your favorite bands, ironic sayings, or your interests. Mix together different themes and sizes to create a look that’s uniquely yours. Put buttons on anything you wear, like your jacket, shirt, and bags.[7]
- You can find buttons and pins online, at concerts, or at stores that sell accessories.
2
Accessorize your wrists with leather, studded, or chain bracelets. Leather and thick metal are your go-to accessory options. Leather bracelets that are covered with studs are a classic metal look. Wear 1 bracelet or several bracelets at a time.[8]
- For instance, you might wear a leather cuff on each arm. As another option, wear a leather cuff, studded cuff, and metal chain all on the same arm.
3
Pick thick metal necklaces or chokers to accessorize your neck. Thick chains and leather chokers are perfect for a metal look. Like with other accessories, studs and spikes are a great option. You can wear 1 necklace or several at a time.[9]
- If you’re wearing a pendant, pick something heavy and metal, such as a big iron cross or a guitar pick.
4
Wear a studded leather belt at your waist or hips. Put your belt at your waistband or sling it along your hips. You might also use it to belt your shirt over your pants.[10]
- Play around with your belts by layering more than 1. Pick belts that are different sizes, like a thick studded belt and a thin red leather belt.
5
Carry a black leather, studded or personalized bag. If you want to carry a handbag, pick one that’s either black leather or military green. Look for a bag that has metal studs in it for more edge, or alter your bag to make it more personal. Add buttons, glue on studs, or paint it.[11]
- For instance, you might carry a green messenger bag to school or work, and a leather studded bag as a purse.

Method 3 of 3:
Doing Your Hair and Makeup
1
Wear your hair long and messy for an easy look. Don’t overthink your style because it’s okay for a rocker chick to be a little messy. If you have curly or textured hair, let your hair go natural. If you have straight hair, apply a little product to help you achieve a wavy or bedhead look.[12]
- Heavy metal hair is typically wild and messy, like your hair looks after you’ve been banging your head along to the music.
2
Opt for an edgy style or shaved head if you want a bold look. Ask your stylist for an angled or fringe cut that stands out from the crowd. Alternatively, shave all or part of your head. For instance, you might shave the left side of your head and wear the right side long and messy.[13]
- You could also put your own spin on vintage rock hairstyles, like the Mohawk or mullet.
Variation: Coloring your hair is also a great way to add a little edge and individuality to your hairstyle. Add a punch of bright red or pink, go black, or bleach your hair white.
3
Wear dark eyeshadow for an edgy makeup look. Grey, blue, and dark violet eyeshadow all look great for a metal look. Layer your eyeshadow on thick so your eyes look bold. You might even want to try a smokey eye.[14]
- Stick to dark colors, but play around to find a color that looks great on you.
- Stay away from light colors and pastels, unless you’re layering them over a darker color.
4
Apply heavy, black eyeliner to your upper and lower lash lines. Use a liquid, gel, or pencil eyeliner, depending on what’s easiest for you. A liquid or gel will create a more dramatic look, but a pencil might look more raw and edgy. Draw a thick line around your eyes, or add several layers until you get the look you want.
- If you don’t want to wear eyeliner on your lower lash line, that’s okay. You can still be metal without it.
5
Wear a dark lip color to create a bold, edgy look. Opt for deep reds, shades of violet or plum, and black. Coat your lips with 2 layers of lipstick for solid coverage. If you like, line them with a matching lip liner, as well.[15]
- If you don’t wear lipstick, it’s okay to skip this step.
Tip: Normally, you want to go bold on either your eyes or your lips. However, metal style is edgier, so it’s okay to do both.
6
Paint your nails a dark color to complete your look. Choose black, deep blue, dark purple, or dark red nail polish. Don’t worry if your polish starts to flake. With a metal look, it’s okay to be a little messy and undone.[16]
- For instance, you might keep black, maroon, and midnight blue nail polish on hand.
- It's okay to skip the nail polish if it's not something you like.

Question
What if you don't suit darker makeup?
Amy Gremillion
Community Answer
Try keeping most of your makeup subtle, then pick one part of your face to emphasize. For instance, you might wear bright lipstick but keep your eyes natural-looking, or try a smoky eye with smudged eyeliner and a little lip balm or gloss on your lips.

You don't have to wear any makeup at all if you don't want to! For your clothes, stick to mostly black, but you can also add in a little of your favorite darker colors, like red or purple. Feel free to make the style your own!
