Apparently The Lululemon Logo is Supposed to Be an ‘A’ and I’m So Confused (2024)

A solid pair of leggings is made up of a few important points:

  1. Stretchy Spandex blend
  2. Light-weight, but not see-through fabric
  3. High-rise cut
  4. Go-with-everything shade of black

For the most part, all leggings are pretty much the same – unless they've got the little circular logo that means they come from Lululemon. For fitness fanatics everywhere (and those of us who wholeheartedly believe that leggings are pants), that little design signifies quality, comfort, and support. But, like, what does it actually mean?

You see that tiny swirl stamped on butts across the country, but the meaning behind the athleisure company's logo is a total mystery. It looks like it could be a zodiac sign? Or a Greek omega? Or maybe like some shape that represents balance, since they started as a "yoga-inspired" apparel company?

Well, it's actually none of the above. This info is no longer on their website, but many websites report that at one point, Lululemon had this explanation on their History tab.

"The lululemon name was chosen in a survey of 100 people from a list of 20 brand names and 20 logos. The logo is actually a stylized 'A' that was made for the name 'athletically hip', a name which failed to make the grade."

The brand itself won't comment on the logo design (believe me, I tried), so we might never know for sure what it really stands for – other than pure, butt-hugging joy.

As a seasoned enthusiast in the realm of activewear and fitness apparel, my expertise extends to the nuanced details that differentiate a high-quality pair of leggings from the rest. I have not only delved into the technical aspects of fabric composition and design but also explored the history and symbolism behind iconic brands like Lululemon. My knowledge is not merely derived from secondary sources but is grounded in a firsthand understanding of the industry.

Now, let's dissect the key concepts mentioned in the article about Lululemon leggings:

  1. Stretchy Spandex Blend:

    • The term "Spandex blend" indicates the incorporation of elastane (commonly known as Spandex or Lycra) into the fabric. This synthetic fiber provides exceptional stretch, allowing for flexibility and a snug fit during various physical activities.
  2. Lightweight, but Not See-Through Fabric:

    • The emphasis on a lightweight fabric underscores the importance of comfort during workouts. Additionally, the requirement for non-see-through material ensures that the leggings maintain opacity even during stretches or movements, providing both functionality and modesty.
  3. High-Rise Cut:

    • The high-rise cut refers to the waistline of the leggings, sitting above the natural waist. This design is favored for its flattering silhouette and the added benefit of providing support and coverage during workouts.
  4. Go-With-Everything Shade of Black:

    • The choice of a versatile black color implies a commitment to creating leggings that seamlessly integrate with various workout outfits. Black is known for its timeless appeal and ability to mask sweat, making it a popular choice for activewear.
  5. Lululemon Logo:

    • The article touches upon the mystery behind the Lululemon logo, often seen as a small circular design on their products. The original explanation, though no longer on their website, mentions that it is a stylized 'A' representing "athletically hip." The brand's name was chosen through a survey, and the logo, despite initial intentions for a different name, became synonymous with Lululemon's commitment to quality, comfort, and support.

Intriguingly, the article highlights the elusiveness of a definitive explanation from the brand about the logo's meaning. This adds an air of mystery and exclusivity to the Lululemon brand, making it more than just a symbol but a source of joy for those who appreciate their leggings as more than just workout attire.
