There are few places as visually breathtaking as Santorini. The crescent-shaped island—known for its signature white-washed stone buildings perched atop craggy volcanic cliffs—seems to have a place on everyone's bucket list these days. Sunsets in Santorini are nothing short of magic, the black sand beaches are otherworldly, and wandering through the village of Oia will make you feel like you've been transported back in time.

But if you're thinking about planning a trip, it's crucial to pack strategically. Here's why.

Sensible Shoes

If there's one mistake that most people make when packing for Santorini, it's not bringing the proper footwear. You'll likely spend most of your time in the village of Oia, where there are hundreds of uneven stone steps—and since cars aren't allowed past a certain point on the caldera, you should expect to do a lot of walking. Leave the cute wedges at home and opt for a sensible (but chic!) pair of flats, like these neoprene espadrilles, which come in black, navy (above), and white. Bonus: they can even be worn in the water.

Lightweight Dresses

Assuming your trip falls during high season—which is between late June and early September—the weather will fluctuate between "hot" and "oppressively hot." Light, breathable fabric is key: think linen, sheer tops, and shorts to tour around during the day; flowy maxi dresses or caftans for dinner at night. Most restaurants are low-key and accept walk-ins, but you might consider making reservations at highly sought-after spots, like Metaxy Mas, which locals often say is the best restaurant in all of Santorini.

A Straw Hat

Even if you don't consider yourself a "hat person," do yourself a favor and bring one anyway. You'll be glad you did, particularly if you choose to make the pilgrimage from Oia village to Ammoudi Bay Harbor. The cliffside trek is not for the faint of heart (there are a total of 300 steps, plus tourists and donkeys to dodge around every turn) but you'll be rewarded handsomely once you reach the base of the caldera. Lunch at Ammoudi Fish Tavern is a must, as is a post-meal swim. (There's a small pier just a few feet from the restaurant where you can dive in for a quick dip.)

A Subtle Scent

Creed Floralie Fragrance, $415
SHOP NOW

I love the idea of taking a new fragrance with you on vacation—it's a way of creating a "scent memory" that you'll forever associate with your trip. Of course, given the heat and the time of year, you'll want to avoid anything too heavy. This fresh floral scent, which Creed just released as an exclusive to Neiman Marcus, has notes of Bulgarian rose, tuberose, lilac and marigold.

Sophisticated Swimwear

Tory Burch Lipsi Swimsuit, $228
SHOP NOW

This swimsuit provides coverage and support in all the right places, which makes it perfect for an island-hopping boat trip (Captain Ted's Santorini Sailing is considered the best) or a lazy afternoon at the hotel pool. Speaking of hotels...there are dozens of fantastic boutiques to choose from, but I'd recommend splitting your stay between Adronis Concept (a wellness-focused retreat in the quiet village of Imerovigli) and Adronis Luxury Suites (in the heart of Oia.)
