How to Become a World Traveler (2024)

Traveling the world is a dream that many people share. The feeling of freedom and endless possibilities is contagious and exciting. The only problem is that many people don't know where to begin. Here are a six steps for becoming a world traveler.

1. Move out of your apartment or house.

World travelers are notorious for moving from place to place without calling any country home. This type of traveling is vastly different from a one week vacation to a beach. The first step towards becoming a world traveler is moving out of your current living situation. Whether you're living in a home or apartment, there is no reason to continue paying rent. Being a world traveler means being gone for months and years at a time. Talk to your landlord to determine the fastest way to terminate your contract and move out as soon as possible.

2. Get rid of all of your belongings.

The next step in becoming a world traveler is finding a place for all of your belongings. Traveling the world is easier to do when you have fewer belongings. Each item you keep will add to the weight of your bag. Hosting a garage sale or selling your belongings is a great way to try and earn some money right before traveling. There is bound to be somebody who would like your clothes, electronic or furniture. You can also rent some storage units to house belongings that you want to keep.

3. Cut out any monthly payments.

Monthly payments aren't a big deal for people who have a steady income and long-term housing. However, these monthly payments can be a drain on a traveler's income. Most world travelers are scraping there money together day-by-day to stay on the road longer. Paying monthly bills is a quick way to see that savings account slowly drain to zero. This shouldn't be a difficult transition as a majority of monthly payments are for services that can't be enjoyed as much when traveling. Paying that cable bill every month won't do any good when you're on the road.

4. Find remote work.

Money is the most difficult obstacle to overcome when traveling the world. While long term travel can be cheaper on a day-to-day basis when compared to normal vacations, this type of travel makes it hard to earn an income. Some world travelers will work where they are traveling for a few weeks or months at a time. This provides them with enough money to travel in the country in which they're currently residing. Other travelers like to take a more flexible approach by finding remote work online. Many world travelers make money from doing photography, website design, coding and other freelance jobs. This income will make it possible to travel endlessly.

5. Learn how to find cheap flights.

Flying is by the far the easiest and most popular way to travel around the world. Unfortunately, this is also the most expensive method of travel. For travelers who want to move around constantly, it is important to learn how to hack this industry to find the cheapest deals possible. Flight comparison websites are the holy grail of world travelers. These sites will compare and list flights from a variety of different commercial airlines to make it easier for travelers to find the cheapest option. Joining frequent flyer programs is another great method for saving money on flights.

6. Have fun and be carefree.

While world traveling may sound like a walk in the park, this lifestyle comes with unique challenges. A life on the road means sacrificing a lot of luxuries and simple amenities that people take for granted on a daily basis. Travelers also spend a lot of time away from their loved ones which can be difficult. When being a world traveler, it is important to have a carefree and fun attitude. This will help in many different situations.
