How To Choose The Proper Aviator Sunglasses Size (2024)

One of the most common questions we get are how to determine the correct size for a pair of sunglasses.

So, how does one figure out the proper size for a pair of aviator sunglasses?

Here are a number of ways to do that:

If You Already Have A Pair Of Sunglasses

How To Choose The Proper Aviator Sunglasses Size (1)
If you already have a pair of aviator sunglasses the first thing you want to do is take a look at the inside of one of the temples. The temples are those things that go from the front of the sunglasses back along the side of your head to your ears.

One way to find your aviator sunglasses size is to look at the inside of one of the temples.

Usually the measurements for the eye (lens width), bridge width and temple length can be found stamped on the inside of one of the temples.

If you don't find these measurements another place to try is to turn the sunglasses upside down and look at the bottom side of the bridge - you may find those measurements there. Randolph Engineering places the frame size there.

How Manufacturers Label Sunglasses Sizes

Manufacturers label the size of their aviator sunglasses according to the width at the widest part of one of the sunglasses lenses.

If the width of the lens is 52mm, then that pair of sunglasses are sold as 52mm sunglasses.

Confused?

Of course - the width of the sunglasses lens doesn't really tell you much about how wide the frame is, and that is what you want to know.

Let us help you.

First Measure The Sunglasses Lens Size

How To Choose The Proper Aviator Sunglasses Size (2)

The first step in determining frame size is to measure the width of one of the lenses that will be placed into the eye wire frame of the sunglasses.

Because these lenses come in a variety of shapes it can sometimes be difficult to know exactly where to measure.

The best practice is to measure across the lens at its widest point (A in the image).

This is the starting point in determining frame sizes.

Next Measure The Sunglasses Bridge Size

How To Choose The Proper Aviator Sunglasses Size (3)

How To Measure The Bridge Size In A Pair Of Aviator Sunglasses

The second measurement is across the bridge of the sunglasses frame. The bridge is that partthat separates the lenses of the sunglasses. It is also the part that extends across the wearer's nose.

This should be the distance between the lenses at their narrowest point.

The measurement should be in millimeters, and this measurement is then added to the sum of the two sunglasses lens measurements.

By way of example, if each lens measures 55mm across and the bridge measures an additional 12 millimeters, at this point we have a total measurement of 122mm, or roughly 4.8 inches.

Now Measure TheEnd Piece

This is a bit trickier because the end pieces extend out from the eye wire frame on both sides of the entire eye wire frame.

Once again you should measure it in millimeters.

We then take the sum of the two end pieces in millimeters and add them to the sum of the two sunglasses lenses in millimeters plus the nose bridge measurement in millimeters.

For example, if the total measurements equal 140mm, then the frame size will be 5.50 inches.

But let's say you can't locate any numbers on the frame and you are still unsure of what width you need.

A Simpler Method

How To Choose The Proper Aviator Sunglasses Size (4)

The easiest way to measure for the proper sized sunglasses is to simply stand in front of a mirror and using a ruler, measure across the front of your face - temple to temple - in inches.

This measurement should give you a good idea of the proper sized aviators for you to purchase.

If the measurement is approximately 5.25" then you should choose 55mm-57mm sunglasses, if the measurement is closer to 6.00" then 58-61mm would be best.

A General Rule

As a general rule aviator sunglasses size comes as a 52mm size (5.00" or small - typically women/small men); 55mm (5.25" or regular) and 58mm (5.75" or large).
