If doctors tell you you're obese, they're not trying to make you feel bad. They're using a specific medical term to discuss a chronic disease-- obesity -- when talking to you about your weight.

"Obesity" is defined as too much body fat and can put your health at risk. It can be determined by a measurement called a body mass index (BMI), which you can check using a BMI calculator. BMI compares your weight to your height. It can also be defined by measuring your waist. When elevated, also called abdominal obesity, it also puts your health at risk

If your BMI is 25 to 29.9, you're overweight but not obese. A BMI of 30 or more is in the obese range. A waist size of ≥40 in (102 cm) for men and ≥35 in (88 cm) for women is considered elevated.
