Plaids and checks are traditionally thought of as Autumn and Winter patterns, but they work equally well in warm and hot weather. As long as the items are in the right fabric and silhouette, enjoy wearing plaids and checks year round. Remember that checks and plaids can be low or high contrast, small or large scale, bold or subtle, and neutral or non-neutral, so take your pick. Here are some outfit ideas. Choose any colour palette.

1. Casual Plaid Top

Combine a plaid shirt or blouse in any silhouette with a pair of jeans, shorts, chinos, utility pants, or skirt. Finish off the look with comfy Summer footwear and a bag to match. Uncomplicated! Here are some examples.

The model combines a strappy plaid camisole with a pair of white jeans and denim jacket. Leave the top untucked if that’s your preference. Dressy white heeled slides complete the look, but feel free to wear a more casual shoe. Gold, silver, red and blue shoes can work well too. Add a bag to match the outfit.

Layer witha plaid or checked shirt instead of a jacket. Light, breezy, and offers good sun protection. Wearing the shirt over a column of white and with shorts is very Summery. Or you can pattern mix the plaid with stripes, or a graphic tee.

2. Plaid Dress

If you bat for Team Summer Dress, it’s the easiest way to wear the vibe. Pop on a plaid or checked dress in a silhouette and colour that tickles your fancy. Add a pair of sandals, slides, mules, sneakers, Birkenstocks, espadrilles, loafers, oxfords, peep-toe booties, clogs, cowboy boots, and a bag to match, and Bob’s your uncle.

3. Plaid Suit

If you’re into pants and shorts suits, wear one in a quiet and subtle neutral, or a loud and bold colour like the model is wearing here. The pattern-mixed top is optional, and so are the on-trend socks and slides. Add a graphic tee or shell top, and sneakers or loafers to dress down the look. Or keep it dressy with heels, shirt, or blouse. Add jewellery, watch, and eyewear as decided.

Plaids and checks are amongst my favourite patterns, and I wear them year round in weather-appropriate fabrics. At the moment I have a plaid linen shirt, a plaid cotton dress, a rayon gingham dress, a tan wool-silk trouser suit, navy gingham pants, and wide leg turquoise and orange pants for warm and hot weather. I’d love to have a bright plaid pants suit too.

Who else bats for Team Warm-Weather Plaid and Checks?

Forum conversations about this post

This isvery timely. I’m not wearing many patterns anymore, but my boss wore a checked dress yesterday. I noticed because I haven’t seen her wear it before now.

I’m on team warm weather plaids and checks. I consider plaids and checks to be both timeless and seasonless. I am picky about the fabric being appropriate for the seasons. Flannel tops are my favorites for the cooler months. Gingham and madras plaid are my favorites for summer. I do have a window pane plaid top in neutral shades that is one of my summer time favorites! Red plaid slip on Keds make my feet happy. My cream Burberry handbag is a frequent choice. I’m glad to be on team plaid!

I believe I am entirely consistent in having zero warm-weather plaids. Even in winter, I avoid that pattern on my torso. It just brings up all my body phobias of being chunky, lumbering, the opposite of graceful….

I am on Team spring and summer plaids and checks. Traditionally, I have worn checks and gingham in warm weather, plaids more in cold weather, but now I am more mixed on these. Most of my checked and plaid tops are long sleeved button downs, perfect for transitional weather and as a third piece or topper for summer air conditioning. I have four plaid bottoms and no paid or checked dresses, but several summer ones are stripes. I think of floral patterns when trying to add patterns, especially for warm weather, but they mix well with checks and plaids.
I love the pink plaid suit and would like one in orange or coral.

Oh my gosh, I love every one of these!! I adore plaids and checks and wear in all seasons. In summer I tend more to gingham but I’d wear many of those plaid dresses and I adore the suit!

Currently I have a gingham long sleeved shirt and a gingham voile top in summer weight/ fabrication. I’d gladly go for more. I do wear my black watch suit jacket in spring, as it is lightweight enough to do so.

Loving the Polo dresses. I have not been able to find them in Canada – the Bay carries Lauren but almost never has the items in Finds (sob!). I also love

Sigrid

Love outfit 1 and want to copy it! Casual, yet a little different. Generally, I find plaid a bit heavy for my style, but I like many of the examples here. Perhaps finding items in “my” colours or chosing more low contrasting patterns are key.

PS. Thank you for yesterdays replay re footwear insoles, I may give it them a try!

I think I have more summer plaids than winter, oddly enough. I tend to like checks more than plaids. In your examples above I find that I am drawn to the more feminine cuts, especially in the dresses. Maybe to offset the masculine feel of a plaid?

I am on the team! Not only did I just post plaid bermuda shorts but I will be receiving in a couple of weeks a blouse in the exact pattern of the purple and green blouse in the bottom center of your collection!

suntiger

I’m not on team plaid/check at all. I prefer prints that gradually flow into each other instead of anything graphic.
I have worn a plaid shirt as a jacket in cold weather, and had a blanket scarf that I liked. I don’t mind the more subtle glen plaids like your pantsuit, but of course for cold weather only.

I do love a nice plaid/checked fabric! The Shop Bop checked camp shirt is super cute. In fact, I think I love all of these!

I love the look, but presently own only a few summer plaids and checks items: a 27 (!) years old black&white midi wrap-around skirt, a blue&white buttonfront shirt, and a blue&white bucket hat.

YAY! I like plaids all year, especially the happy pink or rainbow madras plaids for spring and summer.

Lovely collection! Looking at my wardrobe, I seem to be a more stripes and dots kind of gal…but I am on a lazy hunt for a blue and white check ( large pattern) shirt.

Will probably sit this one out.

After having a life long aversion to plaid, something has shifted and I am now strongly drawn to it. I’m on board with the overshirt idea, especially, for the sun protection and as an easy way to add new colors and pattern to existing items. Very much enjoying perusing all these cheery and fun examples, though, thank you!

Thanks for the thoughts, everyone!

Chewy, a coincidence.

Mainelady and Joy, high five! I relate to your feelings about plaids and checks. You wear them beautifully,

Stag, always good to know what you don’t like. Good job listening to your feelings!

Suz, we share a love for plaids and checks! You wear them with the best of them. It’s the Polo brand you’re after at Ralph Lauren. Try to get it online when they offer free shipping.

Xtabay

I don’t bat for the plaid-n-check team, but it’s always fun to see what others are wearing. I live in a very warm climate and we don’t see much plaid around here in summer. Gingham checks seem to be around, though. It always makes me think of picnics!

Sigrid, dead right. Plaids and checks don’t need to be bold, and by all means get them in your happy colours! (Always a pleasure to help out).

RobinF, good observation.

Jaime, fab to have you on the team! LOVE your long plaid shorts, and excited about your new blouse.

Suntiger, plaids and checks can be very subtle, which is as fab! Like my windowpane suit and sack dress – soft and not bold.

Karie, The Cat, and Blue Jay, I know you’re plaid and check fans! You wear them well

Merwoman, right there with you with stripes and dots!

ChristelJ, interesting how our preferences can switch

April, haven’t I seen you in a black-white-grey check? Must have dreamt it…

I love plaid in all seasons! This reminds me that I have a plaid Vince dress that I’ve been meaning to alter for ages. Weekend project!

That pink short sleeved Caslon shirt might be going in my shopping cart…

Diana, fun! Cute with your pink sneakers. I hope we see the Vince dress on the forum

I am a big fan of plaids & checks, and wear them in all seasons. Most of the pieces appropriate for summer are gingham – it is the most summery check IMO. I have several plaid suits, and majority can be worn across various seasons, including summer, specially with AC inside. This has just reminded me that I need to go to the tailor to hem some pants – I have a summer weight linen suit in off-white with black windowpane, but the pants are too long on me.
I like all the shown formulas and would wear them all (have already done so probably). I do like to pattern mix floral blouse with plaid suits. It is always a fun mini challenge to find the blouse in the right colors, and it is not always successful.
I am meeting some friends for brunch tomorrow morning and will probably wear a gingham dress, inspired by this post.

I love plaid, and ordered a checked cotton shirt a few days ago. I was interested in one of the dresses, the short sleeve linen midi dress, but my size is sold out.

I love that pink plaid suit. Bright and happy! My summer uniform once upon a time was plaid sheath dresses. It’s become gingham fit and flare dresses… does gingham count as a check? If not, I have a number of plaid shirts

Nikki

Yay to plaid and checks

Tanya, you have the BEST KILLER plaid suits! Go Team Gingham Dress. Beautifully Summery.

Rachy, Gingham counts as a check! And I can see you in the plaid suit

JAileen, fun! And hope the dress comes back in your size.

Nikki, nice to have you on the team!

I think I’m benched. I like some plaids/checks, but they’re not necessarily my first choice. I wore LOTS of plaid up until my mid-20’s or so.

I’ve got one plaid blazer, ivory w/brown and magenta plaid and that’s it. I’d love a pair of gingham shorts…I love the retro integrity of them.

Angie, I LOVE your turquoise/orange plaid pants. They’re both subtle and unique, apparently qualities I’d want in a plaid.

I love madras plaid for summer, although I haven’t owned any for years. I have i lightweight check shirt that I haven’t worn in a couple of years…this is a great reminder to pull it out and wear it.

I like low contrast plaids in small doses and only have one plaid, a pair of pants, now. I enjoy them on others, yet have little interest myself. When I was growing up in a climate with cold winters and a school requirement to wear skirts/dresses/jumpers (not sweaters, but the equivalent of a sleeveless dress layered with a turtle or crew neck), many of them were plaids in wool. Also wore many plaid wool coats. I must have played out my appetite for plaids before I was 12.

Definitely associate them with fall/winter, yet like the year round idea. All of these chances to broaden our vantage point by avoiding arbitrary fashion rules or assumptions make me smile.

Sign me up for the summer dresses. I like the preppy versions.

I like plaids and checks, but don’t have many in my wardrobe. I can think of one summer blouse I have that is a mixed plaid and check.

Oh yezzzz!!! I adore plaids year round too! And that pink suit is divine!!

Dana, thank you. You’d rock a pair of gingham shorts!

Kkards, madras is fably Summery.

Eliza, thanks for keeping an open mind, and for the smile!

Sharan, I see a plaid Summer shirt in your future.

cat2, aren’t they lovely.

Inge, HIGH FIVE

I’m fussy with plaids – I like them to meet properly at the seams, and have careful piecing and placement of details, like pockets. At the moment, I own one plaid top (flannel shirt) and one plaid bottom (wide leg trousers). I still think of a crinkly plaid cotton summer dress in an olive, navy, brown, and cream plaid that I had 20+ years ago. It might have been seersucker. A perfect easy care summer dress for a hot day.

I love gingham and madras for the summer!

I love checks in warm weather. Especially black and white or blue and white checked with white pants or jeans with sandals. It screams summer to me.

Thank-you Angie for the reminder of this formula.

I love plaid and gingham and have some summer plaid dresses. The pink Smyth suit is fabulous!

Angie, you did not dream it, but at the moment all my checks/plaids are in winter fabrications.

I love plaid and gingham, and am drawn to it, although I don’t have any plaid pieces. I am tall and plus (14-16) and feel like plaid would make me look larger and too masculine, and gingham is too I don’t know…twee for me? I love windowpane too, and there have been some beautiful pieces that I’ve missed out on. Cream with black stripe or black with cream stripe — so lovely and classic!

Maybe I’ll finally try some plaid this summer. I love the Ralph Lauren pieces, the Caslon pink camp shirt, the Sanctuary top, and the madras sundress.

I like plaids but rarely wear them. I own one plaid shirt and wear it like outfit #1.
