Can you read books at Barnes and Noble without buying? ›

Absolutely! Barnes and Noble strives to create an environment that is welcoming and cozy for all customers. I work in the Cafe, and people browse books and magazines all of the time. Obviously, as a business we want customers to buy products, but skimming and reading in the store is acceptable.

Starting in 2022, Massachusetts will be using the iREAD Summer Reading Program. Support from the Massachusetts Library System allows for participation in iREAD. Visit the MLS Summer Library Program Guide for more information and summer related resources.

The 2024 CSLP Summer Reading Theme is Adventure Begins at Your Library. Participating libraries may use the materials and the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CLSP) theme or create their own Summer Reading Program.

Bookstores don't throw books that are in new condition away very often. When a book doesn't sale, they'll often transfer them to stores where they may sell better. If this still does not work or B&N deems it unnecessary, they'll often return them to the publisher or author.

B&N will provide refunds to customers who are unsatisfied with their book purchases at the discretion of Barnes & Noble customer service. Returns will appear on your sales reporting and will be deducted from your next payment.

Fortunately, there's actually a pretty good number of online resources where you can find many books and either read them on the web, or download them to your Kindle account. (From there, you can read them on your platform of choice, which doesn't need to be an actual Kindle device).

Can you study in Barnes and Noble? Yes, but it is like a coffee shop in that you should buy something to “pay rent” while you're there- at least something small from the cafe, if not a book.

You can sit if there's a chair in the bookshop and read but you shouldn't go into the coffee shop to read unless you've bought the book in hand, really.
