Why do my text messages have a bell with a line through it? ›

Answer. The bell with the slash means notifications are on. The bell with no slash means you will not get notifications.

Tap a conversation. (upper-right). Tap 'Mute' or 'Unmute'.

You will see a bell icon with a slash on it to show a contact has been muted.

This way even if you are using Focus, your friends will not see the Notifications Silenced message. In other words, others will not know that you have notifications silenced. If you want to do this, you will need to turn off “Share Focus Status”.

If you're getting the “Notifications Silenced” message specifically when texting someone, it's probably because their phone number got blocked. While not a showstopper, this is an annoyance because it implies that there are notifications you're missing out on and that your contacts are being ignored by you.
