What does the bell symbol next to a contact mean? (2024)

  1. What does the bell symbol next to a contact mean? (1)

    n/a

I have a contact which has a bell symbol with a line crossed through it on the right side of the contact icon in text messages. Why is there? What does it mean? How do I turn it off? I'm guessing its silencing that contact.

Welcome to the forums. I moved your thread to the S7 edge forum for better visibility.

What happens if you long press on that contact in your SMS app? Do you get any option to unmute it?

It opens up the delete option. I think a while ago, I put this contact on silent and now don't know how to undo it. Everything I search online isn't it. I don't think I'm hearing when this person texts.

This is the first time I have heard of this. Not having a similar device makes this a lot more difficult. I don't think this is even on my Note 5.

Edit: I did find this: https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.red...ute_a_contact/

Go into your conversation with that person, select the "Hamburger" (three horizontal lines) menu in the upper right of the conversation, and at the bottom you will see two options - both are toggle on/off buttons.

"Notification" (the bell) allows you to turn notifications on and off for that contact. If you have notifications off, you will see the little bell with a line through it on the summary page where all your conversations are.

"Pin" (the pushpin) forces that conversation to be on top of your list no matter how long it has been since you have talked to that person.

    I HAVE THE SOLUTION:
It means that somehow, perhaps accidentally, you have MUTED that contact. It simply means you will still get all the messages but will not beep when their message comes through.

    FIX:
Simply go to your contact on your messaging app and see all your messages to them., select pull down menu from top right (3 stacked dots, or perhaps lines), select UNMUTE. TADA!!
