We do not produce any original information but rely on data from a large number of organizations, research institutions, news services etc. We aim to use data from respected and well known organizations.

TheWorldCounts is based in Copenhagen, Denmark. The site is being run and continuously updated by Esben Larsen and Karsten Bjerring Olsen. We work on bringing you the latest and most accurate live statistics on the state of the planet.

8.1 Billion (current)

The current world population is 8,113,890,911 as of Friday, June 7, 2024 according to the most recent United Nations estimates elaborated by Worldometer.

Such large fluctuations in population size over long periods greatly compound the difficulty of estimating the number of people who have ever lived. By 1800, however, the world population passed the 1 billion mark and has since continued to grow to its current 8 billion (our most recent estimate as of 2022).

Every year we extract almost 90 billion tons of biomass, fossil energy, metal and minerals from the earth - more than 11 tons for every single person on the planet.

Finally, children born today will live longer than any other generation. About two-thirds will live past 80, and one-third past 90. Almost one in 10 girls born now will live past 100.

As of January 2024, there were about 5 billion global Internet users, constituting 66% of the world population. The Han Chinese are the world's largest single ethnic group, constituting over 19% of the global population in 2011.

hom*o sapiens

Anatomically modern humans emerged around 300,000 years ago in Africa, evolving from hom*o heidelbergensis or a similar species. Migrating out of Africa, they gradually replaced and interbred with local populations of archaic humans.

Some estimates extend their timeline into deep prehistory, to "10,000 BC", i.e., the early Holocene, when world population estimates range roughly between 1 and 10 million (with an uncertainty of up to an order of magnitude).

World population did not reach one billion until 1804. It took 123 years to reach 2 billion in 1927, 33 years to reach 3 billion in 1960, 14 years to reach 4 billion in 1974 and 13 years to reach 5 billion in 1987.
