Torrid is a plus size retailer (sizes 10-30) you can shop in-store and online. Like Lane Bryant, Torrid is a one stop shop when it comes to plus size clothing, intimates, wide fit shoes, and accessories. But what separates them from other retailers is that they cater to more niche consumers. You’ll find black lace, corset style dresses, and skull prints for those with more gothic, macabre tastes. But then you’ll find girly skater dresses in feminine florals and pastel hues. Torrid has a number of licenses with brands like Disney, Marvel, and Harry Potter that they carry under their Fangirl collection.
Torrid isn’t as fashion forward as ELOQUII. And Torrid isn’t as basic or corporate as Lane Bryant. I’d say Torrid is a little more youthful, a little more casual, and a little more playful than both ELOQUII and LB. Torrid Sizing and Fit
Torrid offers sizes 10 to 30W. Their styles offer a true plus size fit, not a juniors plus fit. I wear a 2 in Torrid which corresponds to a size 18/20W. I generally wear a size 18 at both ELOQUII and Lane Bryant, and I find the size 2 at Torrid to be equivalent. My measurements are 47-39-51, and I am 5’4″. A lot of women swear by Torrid denim, but I have yet to find my perfect fit. I prefer a higher rise with a snugger stretch waist (like this) than I’ve found at Torrid. What I look to Torrid for are their floral dresses, graphic tees, babydoll tops, and most importantly, their swing tanks that I layer under cardigans and jackets in the fall.
What to Shop for at Torrid
Plus size denim: I like to shop for denim at stores that specialize in denim and have a house line of signature fits. That way, when you find a style you like, you know you can buy it next week, next month, and next year. Torrid is one of those brands that specializes in denim. Trendy day dresses: One of my best girlfriends shops almost exclusively at Torrid. She is 5’9″ and finds their dresses long enough for her height. I am only 5’4″, and you’ll see that most of their dresses and skirts are a midi length on me. That being said, I can still comfortably wear their maxi dresses without a high heel. They’ll just fall to more of an ankle length on taller gals.
Graphic tees, band tees, and novelty tees: Torrid is unique in their selection of plus size graphic tees, band tees, and novelty tees. You want a fun seasonal tee with a cute, catchy quote? Cute bras, underwear, and intimates: Cacique by Lane Bryant is probably the leading plus size intimates brand. But Torrid Curve Intimates rival LB’s selection. You’ll find a variety of different bra styles, along with lingerie, sleepwear, and underwear. They have really cute printed panties too!
Plus size swimwear: Torrid carries really cute, fun swimwear. Their styles are definitely sexier and trendier than you might expect. They have styles with standard shelf bras and compression fabrics, but they also carry styles with underwires for more support and lift.
Fanciful, kitschy fashions: Torrid offers contemporary fashions that channel your inner child. You’ll find styles inspired by mermaids, unicorns, and fairytales. You’ll find t-shirts featuring characters from your favorite childhood cartoons. Each season, they partner with brands like Disney to bring princess-inspired collections. Torrid understands nostalgia and fandom, and they’re unique in that they cater to that crowd. And I’m a proud member!
