What’s the first image that comes to mind when you think glam makeup? Are you imagining harsh cut creases, winged liner, heavy contour and highlight, similar to a Kardashian look? Well that’s one version of glam makeup, but glam is not synonymous with over the top, or at least doesn’t have to be. There are a few different versions of glam makeup and it really depends on the feel you are going for.
What Does Glam Makeup Mean To You?
Being a beauty planner, I am working with clients on getting the artists best suited to the experience and looks they are going for hair and makeup wise. Most often times a client will say to me that they are looking for a natural look, and then send me soft glam makeup examples. There are big differences between those descriptors as far as a makeup look, but most people are scared to say glam as they think it means a lot of makeup and over the top. They are scared they will look fake and have pounds of makeup on their faces.
With the right artist and a working knowledge of how you want to feel (elegant, boho, glam, etc.), you will get the look you are going for, and feeling “glam” because you deserve to.
The Different Kinds of Glam Makeup
I look at glam makeup in three stages, similar to Goldilocks and the three bears. There is one that is too cold (or very soft), one that is too hot (very glam, the whole shebang), and then the one that is just right (a little bit of both, to make you feel glam without being over the top).
Soft Glam Makeup
I typically recommend this version to the clients that want to look natural, but an elevated version of themselves. Not over the top at all, and is often the least amount of makeup as far as glam goes. The infamous “no makeup, makeup look”. There is typically some contour and highlight, but just enough to accentuate your features, and natural looking lashes, long and wispy. Eyeshadow is usually matte tones of browns and neutrals.
Glam Makeup
The in between look of Old Hollywood Glamour style (bold lips, long lashes, contour, etc.) and the soft glam (above) is what I like to call glam makeup. It’s a mix of both as you like the natural look on foundation, but then add a pop for the eyes, usually some sparkle, liner and long lashes.
Such as the example below. She has a touch of color on her eyes, defined brows, and winged liner. She has long false lashes to accentuate her eyes, but her foundation and skin still looks super natural. The perfect combo for a fun night out or bride who wants to stand out a little bit.
Old Hollywood Glamour
One of my favorite styles is the Old Hollywood Glamour style of makeup. It’s the one that incorporates all of the elements for a stand out look and there is no doubt about it. You are one confident woman to pull this look off, but it can be super fun to go a little over the top.
Most Old Hollywood Glamour makeup looks are marked by a bold lip (typically red), long and full false lashes, black winged liner, a defined brow, contour and highlight that stands out to make your cheeks pop. Overall you look like a siren with this look.

So now you know you don’t have to be afraid when you hear the word glam when it comes to makeup. It doesn’t necessarily mean that you are going to have an over the top look and feel fake with pounds of makeup on.
It is really up to you and what style you want for each occasion. The best part about makeup too is that you can switch it up. It’s not permanent. 😉
