Mute a conversation in Gmail and you won't see any further messages related to it in your inbox. Any emails added to the conversation after you mute it will be stored in your Gmail account but automatically archived, and you'll still be able to search for the conversation to view new messages. Muting is a handy way of hiding personal communications while in the office and dismissing conversations from colleagues on particular projects.
To mute a conversation in Gmail, open the conversation and then click the "More" drop-down menu. Choose "Mute" from the list and the conversation is archived. Any new messages sent to the conversation thread will not appear in your inbox but will be added to the archive. The thread only reappears if a new message in the conversation is sent solely to you, or if your email address is appended to the "To" or "Cc" fields. After a conversation has been muted, you can click the "Undo" link to cancel that action and unmute it again. To unmute a conversation after this, you first need to find it -- typing "is:muted" into the search field, for example. From within the conversation thread, click the "X" by the "Muted" label. Alternatively, choose "More" from the action buttons and then "Unmute" from the drop-down menu. New messages sent to the selected conversation thread will then appear in your inbox in the usual manner.
Examples of Use
Muting conversations can be useful in a variety of situations. For instance, you might want to avoid being distracted by a conversation thread from your colleagues but still keep a record of the emails that they're sending. Muting is also a useful way of switching off notifications from particular automated services (updates to a forum thread, for example). It's worth reviewing your muted threads on a regular basis to ensure that you haven't accidentally hidden an important conversation.

When you mute someone, their posts and stories will no longer show up in your feed, but they'll still be able to see your posts, and you can visit each other's account pages. And don't worry, Instagram doesn't send any sort of notification when you mute someone.
If you mute someone, it just means you don't see or hear notifications when they contact you. Their message will still be delivered as normal and they'll still see 2 ticks (providing your phone is on and connected to the internet) so will have no way of knowing you've muted them.
