Hi christiana167,

Thank you for posting in Apple Support Communities. From our understanding, you'd like to confirm that when you mute notification for a contact that they are not notified, is that right? Muting the conversation only causes notification for the contact to not alert you. The message will still go through and show as delivered on their end. They will not be notified that their notification were silence.

Use notifications on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Take care!
