ZEISS BlueGuard vs Essilor Blue UV Capture - Evershine Optical (2024)

Blue light glasses block or filter out blue light emitting from digital devices, Sun, LED light and fluorescent light. There are ZEISS Duravision Blue Protect, ZEISS BlueGuard, Hoya Blue Control, Essilor Prevencia and Essilor Blue UV Capture. Many blue light glasses have very obvious blue reflection on the lens surface and yellowish tint on the lens. To address this concern, ZEISS BlueGuard and Essilor Blue UV Capture are made to lessen these blue reflection and reduce the yellowish tint.

Benefits of ZEISS BlueGuard

More Protection

ZEISS BlueGuard uses the latest organic-chemical technology to make blue light blocking part of the chemical structure of the lens material. Hence, ZEISS BlueGuard is able to block up to 40% of potentially harmful blue light. In addition, it is also able to provide full UV protection.

The diagram below shows the amount of blue light blocked between ZEISS BlueGuard and other products:

ZEISS BlueGuard is able to block more blue light as compared to ZEISS Duravision Blue Protect coating.

With blue light properties part of the lens material, ZEISS BlueGuard now comes with ZEISS Duravision Platinum UV. It is a antireflection coating with lesser blue light reflection. This reduce 50% of the blue light reflection as compared to ZEISS Duravision Blue Protect. It ensures that the lenses have good clarity with lesser amount of blue reflection.

Benefits of Essilor Blue UV Capture

Harmful Blue Light Protection

Essilor Blue UV Capture is able to block at least 20% of harmful blue light. It is able to allow beneficial blue light to pass through while filtering out the harmful blue light. As compared to normal lenses, it is able to protect the eyes 3X more.

Optimal Balance between Blue Light Protection and Light Clarity

To reduce the yellowish tint, a colouring agent is added into the Blue UV Capture lens. This coloring agent will neutralize the residual tint while maintaining an optimal clarity of the lens. Hence, improving clarity with less colour distortions.

Differences of the 2 blue light glasses

ZEISS BlueGuard is able to block up to 40% of harmful blue light while Essilor Blue UV Capture is able to block at least 20%. ZEISS BlueGuard is able to block more harmful blue light as compared to Essilor Blue UV Capture.

Crizal Prevencia coating can be added to Blue UV capture lenses to “boost” the filtering of blue-violet light by up to 35%. However by adding Crizal Preventia coating, it will cause the Blue UV Captuire lenses to have more annoying blue light reflections off the surface and also cause the lenses to be more yellowish. This defeats the purpose of Essilor Blue UV Capture which is supposed to provide aesthetically transparent lens with low residual tint .

On the other hand, ZEISS BlueGuard is able to provide more blue light protection while maintaining high lens clarity (with less yellowish tint) with less annoying blue reflections. In addition, with ZEISS BlueGuard lenses, ZEISS AntiVirus coating can be added with no extra cost . In our opinion, ZEISS BlueGuard is more superior in blue light protection and offers better value.
