Sarah Hyland Forgets Filming Some "Modern Family" Episodes Before Her Kidney Transplant (2024)

Trigger Warning: The following contains discussion about suicidal ideation.

Sarah Hyland has shared openly of the physical and mental health struggles she experienced following two kidney transplants. She's previously confirmed the toll that the period of time had taken on her body, and in a new interview, she detailed how some of her time on the Modern Family set was also impacted.

Diagnosed with kidney dysplasia, Sarah underwent her first kidney transplant surgery in 2012. As she told Self, her body later rejected the kidney and she was forced to undergo a second transplant surgery in 2017.

Recently appearing on the Quitters podcast with former Modern Family costar Julie Bowen, Sarah confirmed she experienced serve exhaustion ahead of the first transplant. “There are some episodes of Modern Family where I do not remember filming because I was asleep,” she said.

She specifically pointed to a season three episode titled “Hit and Run,” saying, "That entire episode I was asleep for. I don't remember filming it at all. It was right before my first transplant." She explained that she was only awake when filming was required.

Sarah added, “You have to be a certain level of sick in order to receive a transplant. I was reaching that certain level of sick. I was not able to be awake for eight hours at a time. I was so exhausted all the time.”

Initially receiving a kidney donation from her father in 2012, Sarah's brother Ian donated his kidney for her second surgery in 2018. After that second surgery, her mental health was impacted. She told Self, “I was very depressed. When a family member gives you a second chance at life, and it fails, it almost feels like it’s your fault. It’s not. But it does.”

She told Self that she was able to reach out to someone for help. “For anybody that wants to reach out to somebody but doesn't really know how because they're too proud or they think that they'll be looked upon as weak, it's not a shameful thing to say. It's not a shameful thing to share,” she had said.

Despite the struggles that she previously experienced, Sarah is currently doing better now. She confirmed in the Quitters interview that "everything is stable as of now." And based on one of her latest Instagram posts, it appears that Sarah will soon be working on a new television series.
